  1. And that is why I don't trust the internet Thomas, I am looking for some reference books. Thanks for the help. I knew it had something to do with rocks.
  2. Question, this followed me home, does anyone know what it is? It was about two dollars. I thought and was told it was a stone or concrete chisel but I have been looking through pictures of various types of chisels and haven't seen anything like this. Any idea what type of steel it could be? From what I gather, there are only two or so common tool steels I just don't know which it may be. Knowing what it is in the first place should help.
  3. Unrelated but rhubarb pie is the best pie. I would have come up with a snappy comeback but I see I was beaten to it. I agree copper can be dangerous while cooking acidic foods but that's why you don't cook acidic foods in copper cook wear. I personally don't own any copper pots but have used them and they are pretty great. I would def tin line it but as you can probably see from the rest of this I have no intention of casting a copper pot. Maybe if I somehow come across a copper sheet I'll hammer one out but I don't see that happening any time soon. Frosty, I believe I have 3/16ths sheet, it looks thicker than an eighth but thinner than a quarter so unless it is something weird like 5/32s 3/16 is my best guess. I was looking for eighth sheeting at the scrap yard but they only had that. At five dollars for the sheet I got I couldn't really say no. It will work, they had it, and it was cheap, all important boxes checked in my opinion. I had friends up this weekend who weren't down to try to make it, sadly, and it has been poring all yesterday and today, I don't really have a sheltered place to do this. Hopefully the rain will let up later today or tomorrow but I am pretty sure this is leftover hurricane which made its way up here so it is rather doubtful.
  4. so are you saying I draw out the rims of the disk before I raise the sides or are you saying I should hit them with a grinder. I was going to hit the center of the disk into the depression of the pipe. I could try folding the sides over but I don't really have anything for that other than a log. I will probably try the log at some point but who knows.
  5. Half the fun is climbimg that curve.
  6. The method I saw in a few articles and good ole youtube which I was going to try, was to cut the circle, place it over some sort of cavity, which would be the pipe, and set the disk inside with either a piece of curved stock or tapping a hammer with a hammer to fold the sides up. It seemed like trying to bend the sides them selves caused a lot of ripples and waves which required a lot of time to straighten out. If you have a better method I would love to hear it. I am also not sure if I explained it all that well, or if I even understand it all that well. If it works, I have a pan, if it doesn't, I have a sculpture and memories of what not to do. I am probably going to make the disk nine or ten inches. Like I said, small pan.
  7. eh details. I am pretty sure I actually have one of those lying around too. Thanks for the clear up, I just glanced at the picture and saw a pump.
  8. So I was able to pick up the materials today from a scrap yard. They didnt quite have the diameter pipe I was looking to get for my pseudo swage block but it will work. It will be a tid bit small but that really isn't a big deal. I don't think I have time to do it today or tomorrow which is rather sad, but hopefully this weekend I'll get on that.
  9. That is why I have been looking to switch to hand power. I'm sure I have a bike pump lying around somewhere, or at least enough pvc to rig one up.
  10. I have yet to melt a fire brick but I have definitely melted steel to my bricks. Go to grab the foot long piece and a quarter inch comes out... oops.
  11. I see. I am using a shopvac with a valve system to help regulate the air going through. Although I seem to always have not enough or too much air. I am also using charcoal, I am not quite intense enough yet to burn rocks. I see the forge cranks a lot at the local flea markets so I will have to snag one sometime. I do rather like how this guy has it all set up. Also great finds with the pig house tools. I love old school antique tools, they're so great.
  12. That all looks awesome. Nice set up, I love it. I burned through three files and a rr spike the first time I tried heating something in my own rig. How do you like the hand crank blower? I have been thinking of getting one.
  13. Thanks. That's what I thought. just wanted to make sure before I messed up all my math.
  14. This is going to probably be a pretty dumb question, but when using round stock, is the width given usually the diameter or radius? I am assuming diameter but I honestly cant remember.
  15. I think I'm going to go make one of those crosses in a few hours. You made some good points. I guess I'm going to be busy for the next few days.
  16. Yeah NH is a pretty small state. Decent number of people, but pretty compact. It's like a half hour drive, it might be two towns over but either way it isn't too bad.
  17. I have only successfully made a single thing, which is wonkier than Wonka himself. So I don't think I am the best to choose a project. Maybe when I have some more experience.
  18. I am rather late to this party but I would be all about this. I am brand new to this and the project I do would probably be trash, but it would be a good experience, and most of all fun. My only thing is I never would have 20 feet of anything lying around. I agree a monthly projet could be fun. It would force me to constantly learn new skills and techniques that would further my abilities. I'd also love to see what you all do.
  19. Birch wine is also pretty great from what I hear. I was kicking my self this spring because i was out of town for the first part of tapping season then forgot about it when i got back. Birch season is only like three or four weeks long. I am going to a place called choice metals. They seem nice and from what I saw on the website and what they said on the phone it seems pretty great. It is also only a town over which out of sheer laziness is nice.
  20. Haha thanks all, it is appreciated. As is all of the help.
  21. Alright I admit it, I should have listened to you from the start. I just made one call talked to one guy and have everything set up to go check out their supply of drops. It took all of three minutes.
  22. I understand that but I mostly emailed the ones who didn't answer the phone as a last ditch effort.
  23. fiiiiine Ill try to be precise. A finger is just like a stick but less durable. Would you believe me if I said I am precisely imprecise? Thanks for the tips on drop bins and dealer scrap cut pieces. I sent out a boat load of emails and phone calls today so we shall see if I get any responses. There is also a blacksmiths shop round 20 minutes from me which I also contacted and will hopefully hear back from reasonably soon ish.
