  1. All of them are nice patterns but that explosion is just pretty darn cool
  2. David, thanks I understand what you're saying. The shank part is getting easier but the heads are not going the way I pictured. Frosty, that makes perfect sense and I'll take that to the anvil next time. The whole operation is making a little more sense to me now and is a bit easier. Maybe after 1000 of them I'll have it down pat lol. I'll have to use the Fred Flinstone angle somewhere. I reckon he would have used a stone hammer and a Sabre tooth tiger fang for his though Should I use round stock for them?
  3. Shainarue, good work. Glad to see other women making metal creations. alexandr, fabulous as usual. Awesome work. JHCC, the flamingo is so cool and I love the knitting bowl! As for me, it's been so hot and school back in session so I haven't gotten to the shop up until tonight. More nail making. The one had too much material to head and I knew it, but i did it anyway. It's a Fred Flintstone nail. The other 3 aren't too bad I think except I haven't figured out how to make the heads rounder. Tips on that would be welcome.
  4. I like the bending fork David. Whoever wins it will be a happy camper. Lots of good information on the pandoral clips. The ones I have are round. I had to look up what steel they are. 1060 I believe. I saw people making knives and hawks with them. That's not something I do so I was thinking tooling but after reading how hard it is to move hand hammering, I'm not sure I'll try. Well, probably will but may not get anywhere. I imagine it's like leaf spring maybe? That is a little bit of a bear to move
  5. Ooo cool! He'll be the baddest flamingo on the block. Smoke coming from his nostrils would be a good effect.
  6. Arthur210, is that railroad clip? The reason I'm asking is I had some follow me home or rather, brought home to me today. Along with another track plate, some bolts and spikes and about a 3 foot section of rail. I already have several pieces of rail so I don't know what I'll do with it. But anyhoo, I've never had clips before and was looking at what kind of steel they are and what you can make from them was curious if that's what's in your picture JHCC, liking the flamingo. Is he going to be pink?
  7. So I taken the Kaiser blade mmmhm... BillyBones, That's going to be a nice tool to have. Looks like a mini scythe. Probably morphed from one or maybe the other way around. I need to make a steel run myself but I'm with you. If you need a small piece, the box store is convenient for that. I was watching the live stream from Christ Centered Ironworks last night and when I tuned in, they offered me a video call with Roy if I had one of his treadle hammers to talk about it. Too bad I don't have one
  8. Mikey, thank you. That's where my thinking was but since I have no experience with a single burner, I thought I'd ask. I'm trying to make the most informed decision I can. I have been using a JABOD and I really enjoy solid fuel for the quietness and way less scale production. I have been reading up on that though about how to tune and close off openings properly and I think I understand it much better than I used to. I'll keep looking through the forge sections here on IFI. After asking, I kept reading and saw answers to most of my questions so I apologize but I sure appreciate your response. It helped me to finalize what direction I want to go
  9. Happy belated birthday! Glad to hear you're doing well. We are as well. So good to hear from you
  10. Y'all this is an older thread but I've been doing a lot of research and since Diamondback is mentioned here, I was wondering if I could pick up on that theme. I really wish the Mr. Volcano was still avaliable as I have seen lots of positive feedback on it. I wish I could afford a Chili forge but not happening sadly enough. I've had the Diamondback 2 burner blacksmith model. Can't remember what series, but I know it when I see it. It was a good forge and I'm considering it again. After reading the above about single burners, my question is, what is better about a 2 burner over a single burner? Is there any or much difference? I've always had a double burner no matter what brand of gasses I've had. And if I need to put this somewhere else please do so mods. I try to get as much information as I can without hassling anyone needlessly
  11. BillyBones, I remember the mouse! That brings back good memories Hey Irondragon, how are you doing?
  12. Shainarue, that is a very cool idea for a sculpture. Creative thinking there. I have a good stash of RR spikes. I got them a few years back when they were all the rage lol. I've found very little use for them in reality but your mouse is a good inspiration for taking them somewhere I probably wouldn't have thought about.
  13. Frosty, I remember you telling me to make the twists first when I was making some door pulls. Thanks for jogging my memory for when I go to do it again. Pedro, I love your coffee scoop. It'll give coffee drinking a little elegance.
  14. Frosty, I have drifted material and have a basic understanding, but honestly not nearly to that extent at all. Thank you. You never cease to amaze me with your knowledge and I appreciate you so much It is a Woodmizer LX30 portable. The very basic model. They have a good sale on all their mills until the end of August I believe if anyone is interested. Tommie says it was a plastic bushing that broke and he replaced it with a small piece of copper tubing. And he said he will absolutely hit you up for advice if you are willing and thank you. He's already felt like beating it half to death lol. They really need to update the instructions on how to put it together.
  15. Arthur, your door pulls are very pretty. Very well done. That's something I like to make but haven't in ages. Melted, that's a super nice looking drift. Your tools are great looking and work well. The best of both worlds. Frosty, thanks for the comments on sawing. Sawyering? Whatever it is. Tommie, my daughter, my nephew and my father-in- law worked on putting the saw mill together all day yesterday and still not done. The instructions had them doing things backwards and then he broke some little connector thingy. I forgot what it's called. Got something at Home Depot that he thinks will work. But he thinks he can get it together tomorrow. We are in a busy time with back to school coming up and imminent calving, trying to get structures done and just all the things. Whew. I don't know when I'll get to my little shop
  16. Melted, ha ha I hear you. I'm just trying to keep him from getting moderated. I think it was Glenn that said once if you can't say it in front of your mother or sister or daughter, it doesn't belong here. Paraphrasing of course That's very kind of you to offer him plans for to build a belt grinder. Other than being able to forge out a knife shaped object, I'm not much help. But I admire his desire to make them
  17. My anvil stand is made with Black walnut. I like it too. Sounds like you put in some work on it
  18. Hey there Stirlingcrab! I'm not a knifemaker so I don't have any technical advice for you. Someone who does will be along shortly. Just a little advice though. This is a family friendly place so use of certain language is frowned upon. Just a heads up:) Did you make the handle yourself as well?
  19. No. We will take it slow and learn as we go. Tommie has been researching and looking into this for years, but like most things, putting it into action will be the biggest teacher. Or at least for me. Do you have any advice?
  20. Nobody, that's about the coolest thing since sliced bread. Thanks! Shaina, thanks for posting it : Hefty, that's awesome. Great job. Billy, yay about getting the job! That's always a great thing. We are putting together the Woodmizer saw mill today. It'll be such a blessing to cut our boards
  21. Hefty, thank you. I'll go have a look at that video. It was kind of embarrassing spilling all of that but it's made me realize I'm not the only one that feels like this. I appreciate you so much. Shaina, I've never seen scissors made from horseshoes and I even started a discussion on IFI about ideas for things to make from shoes. That was kinda my thing. I like to keep as much of the original shoe as I can as well. Coincidentally, I was going through things to find sanding belts and I came across a box 'o stuff (mostly things I made that went to the fail pile) and I found these. I actually liked these so I don't know why they are in with the discarded things. Your nails look great!
  22. Does anyone else like the smell of BLO or it just me? I reshaped my main forging hammer handle and sanded it and dressed the face and peen and just now got some BLO on it. I couldn't tell it when I was forging on a regular basis so much, but the handle was too big around for me. It feels much better now. I also took the varnish off a Mustad farriers rounding hammer i have. I like the feel of the handle, but it's too long. I think I'll cut a couple of inches off of it.
  23. No sir, not at all. I needed to hear it
  24. I have some from a big wagon wheel that was on the property we bought and the gracious JHCC sent me some. I'm proud to have it. It's like finding a rare item from antiquity in these parts lol. When I hear about people saying they never see sucker rod is about the same thing. That stuff is everywhere here. I already had a good store of it and there was a bunch left on this property.
  25. Billy, thank you for your advice. I actually decided I was going to go with John Switzer on how to make tools because somehow, he seems to make it more clear to me. He also reminds me of my Dad and it's a comfort to watch and learn from him. Shaina, I hear you on not speaking up when everybody else seems to get it. It makes me wonder now if all the others who say yes are really understanding it or they too don't want to be the one who "doesn't get it." As I get older, I am getting better at asking questions without fear of looking stupid. Thank you for your response. It helps a lot. Frosty, what can I say? You always know how to make me think about things in a completely different way. Everything you just said is spot on. After posting my original thoughts on this, I was thinking about sometimes it may be a detriment to take in too much information from too many sources. I used to manage a Subway and occasionally an employee would have an idea about how to do something differently and I was always open to it as long as it didn't go against compliance. Some of the ideas they would have would be great and we would implement them. Things I woudnt have thought about. Your story about the boy made me think of that. Thanks for the support y'all. I am feeling more confident now. I'm about to go out and sand and put some BLO on a couple of hammer handles. Maybe try to make some more nails if I don't run out of time. Y'all are the greatest
