  1. after remaking this anvil the best I could I tested it against my RR track. I thought the sqaure edges on the plates was nice to have BUT it had NO WHERE NEAR the rebound of my track. The plate was also very loud, which made it hard to want to work, so I quickly moved back to the track. Now my Dad built me an awesome stand for the track and it has about 20-30% rebound, not as good as an anvil but it does work well enough -EJ
  2. I know this is a bit late on asking, but i'm going to ask anyway. How do you like the treadle hammer? What pound power hammer would you say it compares to? Re-building my shop and I think having one would be a good add-on since I can't pay for a power hammer.
  3. And all the BOA members tell me to stick with leaves, hooks, bottle openers, etc.... I'll have to just do it to get it out of my system.....
  4. 55 Gallon Drum Base. Metal piping for air (soon to be upgraded to a bathroom fan and flex pipe) with ash dump cap. 4 inch deep fire pot with scrap metal for a grate.
  5. Welcome, I can't really say I have any knowledge to share but welcome and stuff. Now I shall copy things asked and said to me! Do you have anything to beat metal on like a rail road track? (they work great). Join some kind of Smithing association in your area, theres so much you can learn first hand from a blacksmith instead of watching a YouTuber about it. It also helps the community when you have your location on your profile You probably know all of this if you've been lurking for awhile but maybe this helped. -EJ
  6. Those are beauts! I can see it with a bell hung from it on top of an old English pub door.
  7. Yep, been done before with other neat and small or not so small projects so looks keep going with hooks! I love hooks, made a simple one pounded into wood. But not worth showing, hehe.
  8. Ha, know a mechanic, know a welder, parents like me doing something different and working with hands, and have a n organization close to me.
  9. Ok, I've also thought anout the hole in the ground thing but I remembered I live in Missouri (we grow the whole worlds rock supply). I want to start with the brake JUST START. In less than a year I would LOVE to have a brick forge. And so I'm saving up consisdering I'm 13 and have no job or real source of independent income. (I HATE bumming cash off my parents) -EJ
  10. Yes, I understand I made it sound like I'm bored right now and I am looking at blacksmithing for a couple month way to entertain myself. It's not trust me, I've been doing research for 6 months now and have gotten my plan together (even though they may be wrong plans). So this being said- 2 questions. What forge design should I gow ith if I didn't use a brake drum? And Were all of our guys first forges brick forges?
  11. Well for all I know in a year I'll lose interest (hopefully not) so I don't want this giant forge that I have no interst in using. Plus I'm not doing anything large for the time being so brake drum with hair drier will work for me.
  12. Yeah, I learned this plus my torch broke so brake drum forge here I come.
  13. Well, I was planning on making a small forge from a coffee can and that fast mix concrete stuff, but the head kinda blew up in a way. So now I'm going to look for a 18er brake drum and make that into a forge and go for coal imstead of gas.
  14. Yes. I've remembered that I know a blacksmith in West Plains he can teach me a bit, I think he's a bit 'inactive' though. I will try to join BAM and Arkansas Blacksmithing Association but may not be able to show up at get-togethers much sadly. But I'll try! -EJ
  15. This is my very small "Blacksmithing shop" if it's worthy of that title...
  16. Yes, I am interested making knives, axes, spliting mauls, small decorative peices like hookes, and rings, but I'm open for anything neat. (Do rings count as blacksmithing?) I do not believe we have smithing coal close. Fairly far, I'd say 2-300 hundred yards to the closest one.. Oh, one more thing, I do have a freind that is amking me an anvil oit of some rail raod track! -EJ
  17. Hi, I'm Elijah, but you can call me EJ for short. I'm 13 years old and have always loved to build things and go to flea markets to look at all the old stuff I could find ever since I can remeber. Blacksmithing is a new interest I have found that I can create something amazing out of what most people see as a heavy piece of trash. For right now alI have is a 3 foot peice of rail road track for an anvil (hence my name), a small ball peen hammer, gas torch, and a cheap and broken vise(Oh, I can't forget my nonexistent skill). I look forward to talking to all of you old timers about this wanderful pass time and I hope I never get bored of it! -EJ
