 I paid £0.35 a pound for my 260lb forging anvil just over a year ago, and the guy selling knew what he had. Anvils aren't getting more expensive if you don't buy overpriced anvils. Like Thomas said if it's too much dough seek an alternative.

I can recommend Dave's dwarf forge if you see him at the gathering or stratford. Very simple to set up and works great (when you don't put damp coke in it, silly me -.-).

Thanks Ben, I think I may have changed location after what you have said. The front garden has a makeshift driveway to accommodate an extra car already, I could make it better by concreting it and extending it enough for a proper carport as well as a forge. Might have to cut the fruit trees back abit albeit

I'm new and from Oxfordshire, so not so far away! Welcome to IFI!

I still havn't set up shop since I'm still living with my folks. They are planning to get me to gravel / slate chip the backyard. Is this a suitable surface to put a basic pole shed upon? 

P.s. to Dave aka the Iron Dwarf, would you recommend some sort of flue, exhaust pipe if I'm going to be using one of your forges in an enclosed space?

Grafters do their boots in a 4ee, at £45 they are very reasonable. One of the few options for us in the UK without costly US imports. Why do they do footwear so much better in the states?

You're right about the stand. Lovely anvil though! Steel face on a cast body would be 1850+ for a farriers's anvil I guess. Cue the anvil pros

Thanks for your input! Since im only starting out I suppose general use would be whatever stock I can get my hands on; Is there a specific design of tongs that can accomodate a fairly wide variety of tasks from the off or do you basically have to have a pair for each task?

No Andy, it is a punchmark around what is a very small hole (too small to be of use for much). The hole does open up into a larger rectangular space underneath the horn though.

Flour yeilded no marks. Ill just get my friend to help me lift it round the back; We managed to get it over the lip and out of my saloon car so anything is possible!

I intend to get a nice cheap pair of tongs to get me going then (like Charlotte said) make them for the experience.
