yuck. Don't sound like ideal but to each his own you know,,,,,,,,,,
hard coal that is too large. Just my opinion but I would not take it if it were free. I love the soft coal. About pea size. ideal for forges and my mentality.
Hey, if you want to drive up to Oberlin with a sack of soft coal, I won't say no. I'll even make you dinner.

I was the only one on boiled cabbage and swede...can you imagine the cruelty!
Alan
That's nothing to turnip your nose at!

Sorry it was me that introduced the notion of tingle…bad choice of words…but I don't think white finger is an issue here. The OP only referred to soreness, and I think that is just from unaccustomed usage rather than anything more sinister. This was from a few minutes and sessions of work not extended bouts.
Alan
I get you; no problem. However, tingling in fingers can be caused by a lot of things besides white finger disease*; I myself suffer from a form of neuropathy whose flares are triggered by cold or muscle strain, but which is actually caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B12. Poor hammering technique can also lead to carpal tunnel syndrome and the like.
* aka Raynaud's Disease, a form of repetitive stress injury caused by overuse of vibrating handheld machinery, for those who don't know.

Muscle soreness is one thing; tingling fingers is another. Proceed with caution! Find and fix the problem before it gets worse!

Personally I wouldn't risk such surgery during the fall hay fever season---unless you are doing a great impression of terminal consumption at a 19th century living history event...
Unfortunately, the scheduling is ruled by the need to have the surgery and leave enough time for another sleep study and (probably) getting a new breathing machine before my health insurance deductible resets at the beginning of the calendar year.

Oh and good luck on the op! If you haven't read them its a good time to get into R.R. Martin's books
I've read all of A Song of Ice and Fire that's been published so far, but might be worth re-reading.

These are the risks we take.

One of the nice things about working for a college is easy access to interlibrary loan. I've got calls out for the three-volume sets of Jim Hrisoulas and Mark Aspery.

Perhaps it would be best if you shipped me all your sharp objects, firearms, hammers, etc.
Especially the hammers, right?
Chances are you won't be doing much talking so she should be fine. If you are like some I know though, your wife might even suggest they stick your mouth shut by "accident" while they are in surgery, just for later.
I come from a long line of laconic New Englanders. She, a voluble Southerner, has had more than enough of my silence!
I think a good nite sleep for the missus will be worth you being a baby during recovery. Luck, and certainly prayers
I've been on CPAP for several years now, but I suspect (and hope) this will be better for both of us.
Thank you, everyone!

Couldn't interest some one in a slightly used daughter could I?
Have you tried eBay?
-
Yes. A peen can be a number of shapes, round, ( ball peen or less rounded like a rounding hammer) straight peen, cross peen, diagonal peen etc.
Still not letting me post the link... Grrrr!
Me either. Double grrrr!

oh and flame away (I can handle it)
Is this the new hip way to say "Keep the fire burning"?

I've had the best luck so far in getting it lit with a little newspaper, some slivers of pine, a few lumps of hardwood charcoal, and a lot of air.

Two weeks from tomorrow (that is, on 10/14), I'm going into the hospital for throat surgery: tonsil removal, soft palate and uvula reshaping, and the removal of excess material from the back of my tongue, all to open up my airway and reduce (or even, inshallah, eliminate) of my obstructive sleep apnea.
Prayers would be appreciated, not only for me, but also for my wife Lisa who will have to put up with me while I'm recovering. Thanks,
John -
Prayers and blessings on you and yours. Peace and healing.

I've been thinking about nailing three bits of tire sidewall (about 1/2" thick) on the bottom of my anvil stump for the same reason. I'll let you know how it works.
UPDATE: I did this last night with three pieces of sidewall from a motorcycle tire, which is a lot thinner than the material I'd planned to use. It did not work well at all. The stump was rocking something awful, and the anvil was bouncing all over the place. Made necking down a piece of leaf spring (for a nail header) practically impossible. Definitely pulling those back off.

Check the local building codes. Some places have a specification for the maximum opening in that kind of railing. May be as small as three inches in diameter.
Oh, and yes I like your work here. Just thinking about liability.
Remember the old trick from before they standardized children's furniture safety standards: if a gap is too small for a Coke can, it's too small for a baby's head.

This is all so much naval gazing.

So my tendency to rely on description and eschew photos turns out to be a useful trait!
Quite apart from its utility in demanding spatial imagination from your instructees!

Do not start in the middle! If you are forging a set off tongs, make sure you know how to make all the tools you need to make a set of tongs!
Good point!
Even for making nails, you need a header. To make a header, you need a punch, a drift, a hot-cut hardy, etc. Start with the most basic, and show how this leads to more complex projects. -
The smith I trained with had a half barrel for a quench tub. I can still see in my minds eye the burnt notches in the oak around the rim.
I have used garlic oil perls successfully to keep midges away in this country. Twenty years ago, we were glad of the effect of RID (neat Deet!) when visiting Kakadu in the Northern Territory though. Different league of biting things there I think.
Eat garlic and get a wide circle of friends....as the saying goes...I eat a couple of slices of wholemeal bread version of bruschetta for lunch every day, plus the garlic in cooking...what midge (or friend) would dare come near!
Alan
Enough garlic will either cure what ails you, or make people leave you alone. Either way, it's a win.
This reminds me: it's getting about time to plant next year's garlic patch.... -

First, make sure there's no loose rust.
