I think if you make a mix between the nut and rice it would be great.
Oh, forgot to add: they only had the nut coal at my TSC. Most of the lumps were about walnut-size, but the occasional larger one needed a whack with the corner of a cross pein to break into smaller bits.
No appreciable coking. Come to think of it, I didn't see any coking at all.

Progress report: as expected, tough to get lit. Very smoky at first, but clean burning once the oily coating burned off. (I suspect the oil is to keep the dust down.)
I had a hard time getting a forging heat with the hand blower, but then I realized that I could put the nozzle of my electric leaf blower up the ash dump and keep a constant airflow. Success! Burned hot and clean. Little clinker. I wasn't watching at first and burned a corner of the metal, so getting to welding temperature shouldn't be hard. Overall, very happy.
Here's the rivet forge with the blower:

Well, here's my very first bottle opener. It's made from the center shaft of a collapsible steering column (hence the universal joint at the end), and I'm going to give it to my mechanic as a Thank You for letting me pick through his scrap bin.
The shaft has an interesting cross section, with rounded edges and a groove running up each side. Looks nice twisted -- especially considering that I don't have a vise!

Just PLEASE don't post a series of posts with one pic from your gallery. One post and a word of explanation and we can browse your gallery pics. Posting your whole gallery to the forum one pic at a time is a HUGE waste of bandwidth and I'm sorely tempted to add folk who do this to the "IGNORE" filter so I don't have to wait for a whole boatload of large files to download. Seriously, I can just browse a person's Gallery if they ask us to take a look.
I know you haven't done this. I'm just trying to put the word out to the new folk who ARE posting bunches of photos of their work by making us upload their ENTIRE gallery with every picture. It's like buying a new book every time you want to turn a page.
Frosty The Lucky.
Similarly, if you want to quote a post that contains an image, delete the image from the quote. We all saw it the first time, and that's a really unnecessary gobbling of bandwidth.

Yes, you CAN upset 1/4"x1" into 1/2"x1/2" but it's a PITA.
In the words of Chris Rock, "Just because you can do it, doesn't mean that it's too be done! You can drive a car with your feet, but that doesn't make it a good ---ing idea!"

It's not as durable as wax, though.

Lanolin is an oil produced by glands in the skin of sheep; it's what gives wool its water resistance and typical smell.
You can buy pure lanolin in pharmacies and natural food shops. It's used as a moisturizer.

Well, I got a sack of the nut coal. The sample that they had sitting out showed chunks two or three times the size of a Brazil nut. I figured that I can always break it into smaller pieces if I have to.
To be honest, it looks and feels to the hand a lot like the last sack of blacksmith coal I had a couple of decades ago. I'll let you know how it burns if I ever get a spare minute to fire up the forge again.

Don't know, but I've had a wicked itch in the middle of my back that I'd like to take it to.

It looks like my local TSC has both rice and nut in stock. I've never worked with anthracite; any suggestions which would be better? (NB: I'm working a rivet forge with a lever-cranked blower, doing small-scale hobby work and toolmaking.)

Driving down I-90 yesterday in stop-and-go traffic, I spotted something lying on the left shoulder. Traffic sped up just as I reached it, so I couldn't stop to pick it up, but I did see it was a coil of about a dozen yards or so of steel cable.

Hmmmm; I think I would rough out the tines and then forge weld them to get the base and then do a ferrule like a shovel; ifn I was doing one by hand...
There is a passage in Richardson's "Practical Blacksmithing" that discusses forging a garden rake with a similar process to what's shown here.

And the fools still make the same mistakes...
"The fool hath said in his heart, 'There is no need to read the old IFI threads'." -- First Letter of Saint ThomasPowers to the Curmudgeons.
"Woe to you, Newbies and Greenhorns! For you watch a few YouTube videos and think you're going to make a sword; you refuse to learn the basics and think you are masters. That, and you don't put your location in your profile. Verily, I tell you, you will end up in the outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. And overthinking." -- The Gospel According to Saint Frosty, Chapter 3

Interesting in those two videos how the head of the hammer barely gets above the head of the striker.

I have a retaining ring from the inside of a ball joint that I'm hoping to turn into a bracelet for my daughter.

I have one of these beasties in my own garden; nice to see how they're made.

Nothing more serene than driving in a college town---during summer break! Back when I was going to college I would always park my car whenever we got ice and snow and walk. My roommate asked me why as "You grew up driving in ice and snow" my reply was that the rest of the people in that southern college *hadn't* and so I was perfectly happy to *not* be sharing the streets with them. (Of course if there was an emergency run to be made I was the designated driver during bad weather)
Story of my life, living in a college town. All those high SAT scores, and no-one seems to know what DON'T WALK means.
Getting back to the title (if not the subject) of this post, my mom likes to say that the only things worth doing are "making things" and "making sense".

How do you get a welding/face shield over it?
Adjust the head straps all the way out and squeeze them on over the wrap.

The sweat drip thing drives me crazy in summer around here---any chance you can point me to the brand/style you are speaking of so that I can chase similar down? A simple search isn't really giving me what I think would work well.
Whenever I'm going to do anything likely to make me sweat, I put on a kaffiyeh/shemagh/masarh. Does a fantastic job of soaking up the sweat, plus it makes the neighbors think you're a terrorist.
This is the method I use. -
Anyone want to write the formula for predicting blacksmith tool attractors more predictably than the "get one, more will follow," rule of thumb?
Something like "((O x D x C)-S)/L", where:
O = How many you already OwnD = How badly you Desire a new one
C = How much ready Cash you have on hand
S = Spousal resistance
L = How hard you're Looking
Probably leaving out a couple of important variables, though.

When I was working as a theater tech, "HEADS!" (never "Heads Up!") was the universal warning that something was about to fall on yours.

I thought Smartwool was synthetic, but on further research, it's not! I've got some Smartwool long underwear I can wear.
Boo-ya!
-
Thanks. Hmmm... I definitely would try to avoid anything synthetic directly on my skin, since most synthetics become napalm if they catch on fire. Then again, odds are I won't be catching on fire.
You can get wool or silk base layers; "Smartwool" is one brand, but there are others.
Coal at local Tractor Supply
in Solid Fuels: Coal, Coke, Charcoal, Wood, etc

Basically, yeah. This anthracite is behaving differently than soft (bituminous) coal; more like an incredibly dense charcoal. Unlike soft coal, it doesn't expand and meld together into a mass of coke. It's more like the rocks just start glowing, and the more air you put on them, the brighter they glow.
