Still no updated pics
things are busy at work at the moment so I have no time to myself
will try to get hold of some coke soon and try it out
-
It didn't happen until you put up pics ;-)
-
Do you know what size fork they are from
no good ringing someone and offering forks if you cannot be sure they will fit there forklift
yes people do like to have a spare or second set of (modified) forks
they would be illegal to use if modified or worn beyond specification but people may still want them
here is a link for sizing

Could you fold the blade over rather than shortening it ?
-

Break is 170 ton will do 10mm
will do 25mm hitch some heat
profile cutter helps
-
Any steel supplier that does profile cutting will be a good source for drops
or see your local earthmoving contractor for an old pin

measure your ram diameter and someone on here will work it out for you
-
that Is a nice piece of work!!!
-
that looks like a great effort Don
especially with little research and no money
I eagerly await to what you produce after you have digested the abundance of information on this site
have a look at the thread on Curmudgeons,
might give you an insight ;-)

just done that
they are made of 1055 cast steel
but regardless of that they are not made in australia
they just cast it to look like they are
that anvil is out of the question on ethical grounds
still looking

Fergy ,

Fergy: Reading the ad it looks to be a decent anvil. HRC 58 is decent for the face and it says it'll work harden so being only 3-4 MM shallow isn't too bad. I wouldn't hazard a guess about alloy but they say it won't become brittle and that's a good thing. Have you tried contacting "Old Aust"? The anvil makers might be more than happy to tell you what it's made of maybe put you in contact with satisfied customers. Like they're going to put you in contact with folk who hate them.
There is a lot to be said for modern anvils, folk haven't forgotten what makes a good anvil though plenty of charlatans are putting out junk. Same everywhere.
Frosty The Lucky.
i have tried to find a contact for the Forge but no luck
i thought it said QLD-AUST =Queensland Australia
this is the other option
but does the 224 indicate kg or pounds?
-
depends on what you want to make, for small stuff 60kg is ok, bigger is normally better
well I just want to make 40 pound swords
no seriously I don't know but I want to use it in my engineering workshop so im thinking the bigger the better
but also I have no idea what a 110 kg anvil size is like in person
i maybe able to make one by profiling 2 100mm thick plates and welding together
with a 50mm piece of 780 gr plate on top but this does not give me a horn (pun intended)
You can avoid the shipping and check the product in person in you are able to pick up the anvil in person. You list your location as WA (Washington State?). You could get a brand new Nimba anvil in Port Townsend, WA. I think @ 200 kg. Or a 120 kg Rhino anvil in Airway Heights. I believe either of these anvils are a better deal, overall, than the one in Australia. You would have to pay state sales tax. Also, check CL for Seattle and Portland, there was a large anvil for sale last I checked.
um WA as in Western Australia
would like a nimba but freight may be expensive
https://avwdirect.com.au/Hardware-and-Building?product_id=734
does anyone have any experience with this brand/breed of anvil?
Hey Fergy,
$2000 Australian is just under $1500 U.S.
I think that's probably top dollar even here, but that's one big anvil and seems to be in fine condition from the photo. If you can afford it, why not?
hi ausfire
yeah i know
but if i can afford it i could also get a new one
im trying to weigh up what is better a brand new anvil or an old dinged up anvil that has the runs on the board
if i could get a new peddinghaus in aus i would be happy
the one i have found looks to me like the face is dished and one day i would like to make a kitchen knife
-
All though I know nothing about anvils I do like the peddinghaus anvils
-
hi all
new to this forum
have been directed this way by everything mac
liking what I see
I have been on the hunt for an anvil for about a month
Mac has kindly done a little ground work and found a 110kg new anvil for around 1400 aud plus freight(around 3000 kms away)
I would like a larger one and have found this
the question is it worth it the asking price is $2000 aud or 2800 us
yes I know but it is Australia
and what weight do you think it is?
I have no problem buying a new anvil just want a good quality one I will never want to replace
for a shop anvil in aus what would you recommend?
I think I want a 200 kg anvil but then again I know nothing about blacksmithing
