  1. Alright thanks for the help. I wasn't sure if you could weld on the ground in that you would need to attach the ground cable to something which what I mostly see is the welding table. I plan on getting/making a new forge with a duct chimney first, then get a post vise, then get a welder. Thanks for the help
  2. Alright thanks. I don't think I am going to get a welder any time soon cause I will need a welding table and a decent face shield which I do not have the cash for at the moment and when I do get the cash I need it to make a new forge with chimney and get a post vise. A decent self darkening face shield is like 90 bucks and the table I suppose can be made with scrap. Thanks for the tips as they will come in good use in the near future.
  3. Alright thanks glenn and dsw. I never exactly said I wanted a welder yet, only that I wanted to get stuff welded from a welder. However if I do find a good welder at a good price, I figured why not pick it up if I got the cash. Thanks again
  4. Alright thanks. Yeah that would be great if you guys ever found one cheap. Next time you guys got a stroudsburg meeting, I will definetly come. Is there a way I can get notifications for upcoming events? Thanks
  5. Yeah I am definitely making a new forge after the holidays when I get some more cash. Should I make a pot with angled sides or will a rotor work the same? I do not have a welder, but there is some stuff I want to get welded so I will put that on the list if it makes a big difference. Also, what would you do frosty to use a rivet forge. Would you clay it up, and if so how? Thanks
  6. Give us pictures of the candle holders you have made to give ideas and inspire other.
  7. For all you artist smiths, show us your gates, railings, signs, fireplaces, furniture, lights, sculptures, and any other artist work I have missed
  8. Yep my drill bit said hss on it which I had no clue what that meant. Those dragon openers are really cool! I know that in mark aspery'so first book he shows how to make a wizard bottle opener. Anyone have pictures if they tried to make it? I would get right to the cool openers as you can probably make a good deal of money on them. Only problem is that I need to motivate myself to make all the punches and chisels and I need to mount my vise. Right now I have a machinists vise that seems pretty sturdy and the jaws are flat with no teeth. It seems pretty old it doesn't seem like it is gonna break anytime soon. I'm still looking for a post vise on eBay but can't find a cheap one. Out here in jersey there is nowhere where you can find a post vise, well at least where I am at. Thanks for the help everyone.
  9. Actually I learned the hard way. I was trying to make a carving knife from a drill bit and I did not anneal it, just heated it up and started hammering. I kept thinning out the shank section and eventually it just snapped. It was either tungsten or it was because I forgot to anneal, but I think tungsten you can't even forge if I remember correctly?
  10. hi, First off happy thanksgiving and I hope everyone is having a good time with their families. So my issue is that I use a brakedrum as a forge, no pot. I recently upgraded from anthracite to bituminous which I love. My only issue is that I have trouble heating my steel in it. I have it buried in hot coal and it won't heat. It is driving me so crazy. And no the steel isn't tugsten. At the moment I am into carving knives which really makes me want to switch to a soap can forge or another type of gas forge. Maybe my issue is that I need a table around my brake drum? Any tips? Thanks
  11. I was thinking about making a brass hammer, but I have heard that when using a softer hammer than the steel you are striking it will create a hollow in the hammer. I think it was Moony who told me this. Hope this helps
  12. Alright thanks. So is an anvil block the thing I see lots of guys hang off their horn? Also by stirrup I suppose it is a foot pressure type hold down? Also thanks for the instructions metalantown
  13. Nice opener and corkscrew! So is the chain hold down in that pic held down by weight or putting your foot in something? Thanks
  14. Heres the finished knife. It works too, I threw it like 2in deep in a log.
  15. Heres some progress. I am not sure if you can see in the picture or not, but everything but the anvil and log had to come down an inch which was a lot of work. I added some dimension to the anvil as well as some of the forge table:
  16. Ok thanks. I want to do this type of chimney but by what my research shows, it is pretty expensive for the chimney flue. Any idea how much it would cost or where to get it cheapest? Thanks
  17. This is what you mean if I understood correctly. I want to do the same exact thing as this except make it side draft. Thanks http://www.iforgeiron.com/uploads/monthly_2015_10/DSCF1109.JPG.20539c443eac1d657c706d16e405693a.JPG
  18. Alright thats what I will do then. The only issue is that I do not think i got the cash for chimney flue right now
