  1. Hi All, Just my two cents worth I have a 335# euro anvil and I love it!!! Like mentioned before you will have to dress it out. I have had mine for about 4 years now I also have 2 peter wrights 117# and 150#, 2 vulcans 200# and 60#. I use the peter wrights for demoing and the 200# vulcan at my day job because it is quiet. The 60# vulcan is for the boy scouts when I teach metalworking with the blacksmithing option. I have noticed that my euro anvil is getting harder as I have used it but has not got any marks or it has not cracked or chiped. For the money it was a great choice for me. Gaylan Veater
  2. Our prayers are with the both of you!!! The Veater Family
  3. Let me explain my horseshoe. I was told by a blacksmith that he should put the horseshoe as to dump all the good luck into his shop. Everyone else should put the horseshoe up to hold all the good luck in. I have enjoyed all the good luck falling into my shop!!! Gaylan
  4. Thanks for pictures they are great!!! Someday I would like to see that in person. Sounds like everyone had a great time!!! Gaylan
  5. Hofi, Thanks for the pictures of the surrated leaves. I had a whole bunch of bolts left over from the transmissions that I rebuild so I forged a leaf from them and they turn out just like the ones of the thread bar but I had never thought about the gillotine tool to put the threads on nice idea. Thanks so much for sharing your talents. Gaylan
  6. Wow Hofi, Thanks for the pictures. That is basically how I make my leaves also but I can not do it in one heat!!!! More practice I guess. Anyway very nice looking leaf and thanks again. Gaylan
  7. Looks great!!! Most of us are hard on the things we make. Most people are very please with the pieces that we seems to think are not good enough. I like the design you have made keep up the work Gaylan
  8. Kashmire, I haven't tried the heat tape but what I do is take some big pieces of metal heat up in forge and set on the anvil works for me. We got our first snow today in the mountains may get to the benches tonight!!! Gaylan
  9. Orgtwister, Great find!!! I remeber a vice I got at a garage sale for $5 buck had no spring, no mounting hardware and a frozen screw. I soaked it in a buck of ATF for 1 month then cleaned up put alittle heat on the screw and it opened up the screw was like new. I made all the harware and spring and now it is a great vice I use all the time!!! Have fun with them and those that may be close and need one don't be afraid to get one and make the missing pieces. Gaylan

  13. Just my 2 cents is to just leave the anvil as is and got to forging on it see what your works look like after that. One of my anvil that I thought did not look too good after some time forging on it has made it look better!!! Have a fun time. Gaylan

  16. Very good Frank, Mark Aspery teaches the use of a slot punch. That is what I have used every since his classes and that is what I prefer to use on hammer head, flat bar etc. That is my 2 cents it works great for me. Gaylan

  20. I have made chisels and punches from mud flap hangers and they work really well. The shafts in the last picture are shaft that are used to apply the brakes on a semi also some good steel maybe 4140 but i am not sure. Have fun whith it and you have found a good friend and supplier for junk yard steel treat him well!!! Gaylan
  21. Looks like you really lucked out great things to find. Good luck with them put them to work. Gaylan
  22. My 10lb hammer had a 3foot handle I cut mine down to 2ft and it works great for me. But it may not work well for all. Maybe hold up on the hadle and swing it abit to see what feels good and maybe cut a little less than you think. You can always cut more off but not so easy to add the wood back on!! Just my thoughts.Have a great day!!!! Gaylan
