There are many traditional fluxes you can make. Japanese used some mixture of straw ash and clay I believe.
Daar is baie tradisionele strome wat jy kan maak. Japannese gebruik word om sommige mengsel van strooi as en klei Ek glo nie. -
I can't imagine mastodon molar is cheap! As far as looks go &$@?!!!!!!!

If I can anneal it in a good fire I can cut the bearing cage and peel it off while saving that metal, along with all the roller bearings and the main body. Which is what your saying. And the main body would be hard to cut with anything other than a torch, even annealed it's probably gonna wear out blades on my horizontal bandsaw.

ASO's or are they decent?

I found a company producing cast ductile iron anvils in Australia. Good price, looked good to me. Checked those out yet?

I had a good idea, results will be posted in the future to determine if it is a good idea or just an idea.

Excellent information, pictures alone made it worth the read. If I was a writer you would be I charge of illustration.

Take a piece of 36" 1.5 diameter pipe, drill holes 2" apart down the length of it in a straight line. Dig a small trench. There you go.
On another note I'm totally jealous. Looks amazing. -
There are crackerboxes on Craigslist for $100 day and night around here man.

Hey guys, I got a monster wheel bearing from a triple 7 caterpillar dump truck. I'm trying to find any material or manufacturers mark (been in class all day), but haven't found one. Any ideas as what it might be made of or disassembly? I might just wait until I build a bonfire and anneal it there, and then take a die grinder and cutting wheels to it unless any other advice is offered.
-
Appreciate it. I didn't see one. I'm gonna post a seperate post about disassembly. Don't wanna steal this posts thunder.

I got a wheel bearing from a Cat 777 100 ton dump truck. Still trying to figure out what it's made of or how to get it apart.

A great pyranese after the Fourth of July fireworks. That split second you realize there is a massive white beast with unknown intentions in your shop and it's in between the door and you, anything within reach becomes and weapon. Luckily he was a big old sweetheart and we called the owners and they came and got him. Better part of 200 lbs with big teeth and lots of white fur makes for a good scare tho.

The differential equations and linear algebra, not to mention statics and dynamics scare me away from EE haha. Welcome man!

I love solid works, learned it in an engineering graphics class. It's the bomb, especially when your making single parts and creating assemblies, not floor layouts so much. I love it, it's perfect for having parts machined too. 3d printers even. You can find translators to make it where most machines can read it and make your part.

Please excuse my ignorance but what is a "bouncy castle" fan? Squirrel cage??
Not really, squirrel cage style fan won't produce much static pressure. Doesn't work well for a deep coal fire. A bouncy castle blower is a radial blade type. It has blades like the impeller in a turbocharger for example. Won't produce as many cfm's at low pressure, but more cfm's at high pressure. -
I've used charcoal and coal, never propane. While I like a charcoal fire better, the coal is a lot less maintenance and is easier to use in a day long forging session. Charcoal is lower smoke and cleaner, but the coal burns longer and is a more easily molded.

A buffing wheel with various compounds is a god send.

I don't wear gloves for general forgework. They'll get hot and burn you worse before you can get them off than touching something hot the split second before you quickly retract your hand.

Make it something well insulated haha, I bought a 5000 btu window unti for $30 all I had to do was replace the part of the cord a dog chewed on. Insulation won't run you more than a $150 for a small building, especially if you just use some r13, I work at Home Depot and the little rolls of faced r13 we sell are like 12 or $13. Then a cheap window unit.

What part of Texas are you from? I'm near Waco.

I love my tfs. It just needs to me mounted well with a touch of caulk under it to dampen the ring.

Let me interrupt this arguement with a statement. "I WANT ONE OF THOSE, EVEN THE LITTLE ONES!!" I think both of you know this better than me and will not contribute to this argument. However, let me leave you with a thought. Think of the connotations we put to words according to where we live. Even as far as considering a large enough geographical difference to amount to the change in connotations as a different dialect. Another thought. So many tools are used other than their intended purpose. Associating them with what we see them used for could add up to a lot. Just keep it chill guys. Anyone openly questioning someone else's intellect without providing constructive feedback is probably hiding something about their own. Don't be that guy. Peace!
