  1. Hi, Been a while since i posted something. I recently got a call from a friend of mine; he spotted an anvil standing outside his neighbors shed. Said when he bounced a golf ball off the face, (sorry), the ball bounced right back into his hand as well as ring a little. The only thing is is that from the pics i got from him, it looks like cast iron (it has no pritchel hole and a wide face). It has some writing on the side, but unfortunatly the rust is there and so is the thong :) if anyone knows anything about anything, your advice would be appreciated Thanks. Ps. i think the writing ends in LBS??
  2. I would try out the book New Edge of the Anvil by Jack Andrews, and perhaps the Art of Blacksmithing by Alex W. Bealer. Also the Complete Modern Blacksmith, or maybe (the title might be wrong,) Blacksmithing:A primer of the Tools and Methods?
  3. Oh yeah Damastang. That would be a nice score. I also sometimes work on an English made Mousehole anvil. They also have the same composition (wrought iron body). I think the guy in Malanda is a farrier, and his ad is in the Tablelander every now again.
  4. Holy gosh... whats the weight??
  5. hey, same as you damastang, in the tablelands. I got it form Stockmans Supplies in Brisbane and sent up here. What weight is your friend's anvil if you don't mind me asking?
  6. Hi all, I recently purchased an Australian made Odywer anvil. It is around 44lb, got it from a farrier's supply in Brisbane, and posted (yes, i posted an anvil) up here. I have had it for about 6 months and it has a few dents and bangs in it. But whats really pulling me up is that they say they are cast iron, but the ring (when unbolted) is about the same as a cast steel one. I also got a 3/4 round magnet and dropped it on to the face. It bounced right up into my hand. it might be the weight, I don't know. In the pics, there is obviously a plate of some sort welded on to the body. maybe the bigger types, the 95 kg anvil, might be entirely made of cast iron. Maybe i could try (if the face is steel) hardening it if it isn't already hardened. Does anyone know about this type of anvils? Thanks
  7. It could be a Mouse hole or even a fisher... seen anvils with those strange markings on them but forgot the name. :(
  8. Thanks guys, think i might stick with the good old charcoal. The stuff does get pretty xxxx hot, just have to have a lot of it. That's where bush fires come in handy!
  9. Hi, Does anyone know where I could find some good bituminous coal in Australia? As of now, i am using BBQ briquettes that don't coke, have heaps of ash, and are basically not clean. Would anyone know where i could find some?
  10. ive got dirt in my shop, pretty good on the feet. also helps with bolting down anvils and post vices.
  11. ianinsa, i am in Australia , just like a said before. North Queensland.
  12. Thanks guys, I just had a closer look at them, and they look like PW's and Mouseholes. The base of some of them have a square edge, indicating that they might be Peter Wright? The others have a Mousehole like base. Oh yeah, Im based in Australia and these anvils seem pretty cheap. (A 150lb was going for about $422.00 AUS) thanks, Owen
  13. Hey all, this is my first post. I was just wondering if anyone knew about the 'Anvils South Africa' company that sells anvils. They are in quite good condition (from the pics) and are a little less pricey then a brand new TFS anvil. They are based in Pinetown, Kwa-Zulu Natal, in South Africa. Are they good anvils? After all, they could just be another scam, but i doubt it. Anyways, if anyone would want to check them out, here they are: anvils.co.za/
