  1. Hi everyone, I've been looking for a new blower for my side blast forge, and we have come across a Fasco, 115 volt, 265 CFM centrifugal blower on Amazon. I was wondering, is this too much CFM? I'm burning coke, not much charcoal. i know you need a strong blast for a coke fire, not to mention some pressure. (please correct me if i'm wrong about anything). Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking!!
  2. Hey Chris, I've seen the Fascos, and they sure do look like nice blowers, but i think i might go with the Daytons. Has anyone used one before? I'm up near Anvil_Fire777, and maybe shipping the Dayton 1TDR3 from Amazon might work. Thanks for the recommendation Chris.
  3. Hi there, Sorry if this is a little late (say four years), but you said you're on the Tablelands? I am having the same problem with blowers, and as my $28.00 hairdryer recently broke down, I am on the look out for another blower of some sort. Hairdryers are noisy, and if you don't take out the heating in it, more power will be sucked up by it. (I'm no electrician, please correct me if I'm wrong). I looked at the blowers on Amazon, and they have pretty good deals, say with the Daytons, and they can be shipped to where you are right now. They are what i am hopefully going to go for. You said Vacuum blowers are noisy, I hate working with a noisy blower to the extent of putting muffs on. I hope you have found what you are looking for!!
  4. Odwyer 44# and a 100# Armitage Mousehole... both great anvils, particularly the Mousehole. It was shipped across Australia to where we are now. I'm very pleased with it. I also like the Odwyer for the neatness and look of the face and edges. I've left some sharp edges on both sides, which is helpful when making horse heads.
  5. Hi Darryl, I have forged it out into a coat hook-and drilled some holes for a nail. Thank you for the kind words! By the way, sorry about so many multiple posts!
  6. Hey everyone sorry i am having trouble uploading photos
  7. Hiya All, Just can i say before this that I do not at all take any credit for the design of this item, I am just posting this for the negative/positive feedback it may acquire. So this is my first go at a Brian Brazeal style horse head. It is forged out of wrought iron, at the local historical village. Unfortunately the bar was approx. 1/4" by 5/8", a little to small for the bottle opener i planned to make, but a good size, i found, for the actual head. (This was my first time working with wrought iron, i can say i need a LOT more practice with it). After forging, i took it to the wire wheel and then soaked it in vinegar for a few days. The layers have come out. I also must say i need to forge more punches for myself, as i plan to make more of these in the future. Negative/positive feedback will be great! Cheers!
  8. G day FlyingXS! hey if you don't mind, what did you use to cup your cupping tool? Cheers!
  9. Cheers for the info everyone!! The torsion bar was from an old Fiat 850. I believe that the bar is a little to thin for a hammer drift, but a good size for the hammer eye punch. i may end up forging it with a handle, or without one.
  10. Cheers Frank, it does seem like its extremely hard. Punches are looking up!
  11. Hi all, Has anyone ever used a torsion bar to forge hammer eye punches? The width is 23mm. I'm hoping that this is a good size for small punches. Does anyone know what they are made from? Thanks!!
  12. Hi everyone, Just wandering if anyone has seen an anvil like this. its current location is the Stockmans Hall of Fame. What intrigued me was the (painted?) BS-4 on one of the sides near the horn. This was quite a big anvil, the face i'm guessing was around 6 inches wide. There was no indication of a face plate welded on, maybe indicating that it was cast? Cheers!! Oh and by the way, i didn't see any markings on the body (well, on the side facing me).
  13. From what i heard somewhere SG iron is the same as ductile cast iron, is it not? I have a 44lb Odwyer (i couldnt afford much at the time). The ring is great, just like cast steel, but the face is quite soft. The rebound is great though, if you dropped a small ball peen on it, it ll bounce right back up. TFS anvils in the states are cast from ductile iron, and according to their site, are hardened to 52 Rockwell. so maybe Odwyer doesn't harden their anvils, because the farriers like them soft.
  14. Most times, used, good conditioned anvils are well in the $3-$4 per lb range, if not higher. Most times it also depends where you live. I don't really know about the Seattle area, but no doubt the others in your area on this forum will be able to help you more. Cheers.
  15. yeah i saw that one... i would contact the seller, ask him/her to do some tests with it. Ask them if they have forged on it or anything, if the rebound is any good.
  16. Hey all, i didn't know where to post this topic, so i guess this will do hopefully. i recently got a nice old piece of steel that will be sunk into a 6'' inch wide piece of 4 foot approx PVC pipe full of concrete. The thing is, the face of the anvil is slightly crowned. Would this effect the performance of the anvil? I will be using this anvil for bladesmthing, and I've heard the Japanese work on crowned anvils too. The pipe would weigh about 400# plus (i did an electronic calculation). Should i grind it flat, or leave as is?
  17. Well everyone, I have talked to a guy down in Tasmania, and he told me he uses a belt grinder attachment that runs just like a grinding wheel, except a belt. He creates amazing Damascus blades with this as well, and the price is only $290. (aus dollars). Here it is if ya wanna have a look. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Multitool-Bench-Grinder-Belt-Disk-Linishing-Attachment-/261513447318?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item3ce36a8796&_uhb=1
  18. Doesn't look like a Mousehole too much... the '70' on the side is confusing. Most mousehole anvils made in that period had the hundredweight and the manufacturers name. Try caulking it down a bit. Otherwise, get a ball bearing and bounce it of the top of the face. Looks in pretty good condition.
  19. Hi Everyone, Recently i have started to have a craving for making blades. So after this market store, (when I hopefully make some dollars), i will start investing in a normal, 2x72 inch belt grinder as my Ryobi Bench grinder and angle grinder don't give that extra sharpness and tone to my knives. The problem is, (as a few have discovered), belt sanders are reasonably expensive, and quality ones are quite hard to find in my part of town. So, would anyone know where to find a company manufacturing them in Australia, or would it just be cheaper to import them from overseas? Thanks.
  20. Thanks everyone for your ideas. The guy who was offering it changed his mind at virtually the last minute, and explained that it was his fathers. Well, ive been looking around for a while, and my friend from Torres Strait told me that his grand father is a mechanic, and is now retired. He also told me that he has four anvils, and he only uses one. I think the one he was talking about is around 150-200lb, and in good condition (by what he remembers). He also might offer it for free, as he uses only a smaller one. So its just how much stuff we bring back from the Coast (wink) that decides if we can pick it up or not. So yeah, thanks again guys, really quite surprised with this one.
  21. oh yeah the shoe is size 11 i thnnk, 18cm long. thanks
  22. Thanks Iron Dwarf. After looking at it for a while, the last three letters looks like 'SLDS'. Also the passage of writing looks too long to say 100 or 200lbs. I have had a look at possible answers, like Hadfields, or Sheffields, but as soon as i saw them i ruled it out B)
