  1. Jim welcome!

The Blacksmith Guild of Virginia is having a demo in March in Amelia VA where Bob Rowe and Carl Hirner from Historic Williamsburg will be forging a wrought iron tomahawk with steel insert, plus a few other items as well. That may be a demo you would want to see being interested in knifemaking. You are always welcome at any of our events!

we have members throughout 6 states. We are serving Virginia but our overall prupose is Blacksmithing. And out mission knows no state lines! We are glad to have you with us! IFI is a wonderful place to hang your hat as well. Just pull up a chair and enjoy the fellowship!

yesteryear is right. The hammer in at his place in the fall is a great thing. Especially this year with Randy McDaniel demonstrating. There will be a lot to learn and even more opportunities to do some hand-on stuff throughout the day! It will be a great welcoming party for you I hope!!!

    Thanks

Our January Newsletter is ready to be downloaded on the main site. And our backlog of downloads are on the links page!

Members: This is best place to find the answers to any type of questions on blacksmithing. The knowledge here in these posts, blueprints, and chatroom is far beyond the bindings of any book you could ever imagine!

I am proud to be a member of both The Blacksmith Guild of Virginia, and the I Forge Iron Family!

  4. Glad to see you getting off to a good start. The Tidewater guild is a great guild to join. Some of our members are from that area and are also members of the TBG.

Please let me know if I can be of any help. I am only a couple hours away! :-)

  5. Howdy Vernon.
Welcome to the forum! There are several guilds in Virginia that are all over and can offer you a lot of help. I am lucky to be the president for the Blacksmith Guild of Virginia, and members of several other great guilds around. If you visit Blacksmith Guild of Viriginia - Home and go to the links page I have a listing of some of the guilds in the area. I encourage you to join a few of them.

Our guild will be meeting this Saturday in Amelia Virginia. And the demo will be focusing on some of the basic fundamentals in the forge from layout to basic projects that help practice good habits! More Info is on the site. You are more than welcome to come by! :-) I hope to see you!

Please let me know if there is ANYTHING I can do to help you!

  6. The more I get into blacksmithing the more options there are for hammers. weight, shape, style, manufacturer....

What is your favorite hammer you do most of your work with?

Mine is an Ozark School of Blacksmithing(Tom Clark) cross pein that weighs in at a little over 2lbs.

  7. I wear a waist apron made of leather. It started out as a full front apron and I modified it. It was hot and uncomfortable for me. I found that when I did not wear one I was getting dirty right at my pockets on my jeans. I then saw Ken Swartz to a demo and he had a waist apron on. I love a waist apron, it is a lot more user friendly for me.
