  1. I was told once by a veteran smith not to over react to a situation. People get hurt worse when they over react to something. Stay Calm! I have kept this in mind the few times I have needed it in the forge and in everyday life. It has kept me from hurting myself worse.

  2. yesteryearforge gave me a great bit of advice with wire brushes. He said that a lot of wires that go into or around the eyes even while wearing safety glasses is because the person is turned to the side of the one wire brushing. Even with safety glasses on I try to either have my back turned to the one brushing or facing them head on. I also try hard not to shoot them his direction by staying aware of how I am wire brushing with the grinder...

  3. Rich thanks for the ASO blurb. It is needed to remind those starting out that they can make quality pieces without having the anvil, and other tools. Some of the best knives I have ever seen were made on a piece of steel in a bucket of concrete!

  4. Hey guys I have just put all of my photos of Quad State in the gallery. I hope you guys enjoy them! It is around 114 pics! I may post a few back over here that are cool with some type of description.

This was one of the greatest things I have ever been a part of in my life. It was great meeting all you guys from IFI there too!

  5. Depending on the weight of your hammers I would use the horn of the anvil. The closer you get to the tip of the horn the more of a fuller you have. I have used the horn in the past and was pleased with the results. I would however suggest two things: 1. heat is your friend, and 2. fuller then flatten every time. This will help fight off cold shuts, and control your taper.

Good Luck. I am no where near as smart as these other guys...so you will get better advice. I am sure of it!

  6. I would really like to meet any of you guys that are going to be there. Here is the shirt and hat that me and Mike (yesteryearforge), and Josh (his son), and our wives/girlfriend will be wearing in one way or another. Also we might have on Yesteryear Forge hats too...Mike is the really tall guy, Josh is the guy with all the muscle, and I'm pretty much the mouthy apprentice... :-)

I really hope to meet some of ya'll!

  8. The science teacher across the hall from me does some of these things to our kids once in a while. Something about there are blind spots at certain places in our eye sight and our brain automatically takes the surrounding image and "fills in" the missing dot. And I would hypothesize the movement comes from your brain constantly adjusting to meet the right color and shape. Some people can actually see the dot in their regular vision. I thought the guy was full of it until he made me cover up one eye and hold a pencil out at this certain place and part of the pencil disappeared. I can't even begin to describe the steps to do this, but it worked. I accused him of tricking the kids, and like any good science teacher he sat me(the skeptical government teacher) down and proved me wrong. So for the rest of that day I had our kids were all talking about how cool the day was. I should have known better...But it was still fun. These will show up in his room tomorrow! Thank you for sharing!!!

  9. I am extremely excited about Quad State. If all goes well, and the school can get substitutes, me and the wife will be trucking it up to Quad State! Actually we will be riding up there, yesteryearforge and Linda (my coolest of cool in-laws) will be the pilot and co-pilot of this pilgrimage...

Who else is going? (Glenn you better be there I want to shake your hand and thank you for this place IN PERSON!)
