  1. I feel almost guilty for what was waiting under the tree for me this year...

My Birthday I got a class with Dale Morse. default2

    Christmas:
2.8# Ozark School of Blacksmithing rounding hammer
8 pairs of assorted "Tom Tongs" from Blacksmith Supply
    9 mini anvils
Ozark School of Blacksmithing striking hammer
DVD of the Friday night demo of Quad State (striking demo)
cool swage with leaf veins, and other shapes all on one

The coolest thing was watching Mike (yesteryearforge) work with his grandson all day yesterday...that was really special!

I am a lucky guy to have such a great wife, and in-laws! They made this year really special! I would say the best ever.

  2. I have used one of yesteryearforge's portables numerous times, and I guess it would be considered a rivet forge. It has a champion blower on it and I really liked using it. I could control my fire, and weld if I wanted to(never did though, but did burn up some stuff!). It did everything that I needed it to do. I also like a hand crank. One of my big problems is controlling the size of the fire, and the hand crank I feel really gives me a better sense of control.

Good luck finding what works for you!

  3. I second Ed. I have seen these anvils from Blacksmith Supply, and know of someone who had just recently bought one at the Yesteryear Forge Hammer In from John(Blacksmith Supply). They do seem to be good quality, and I know the guy who bought it is very happy with it!

I also know of someone who just ordered the 450# Nimba Anvil. That is one awesome beast!

  4. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. And safe travels to those that are going to see their families. I have my students watching a Thanksgiving video today, and wanted to share some cheer!!

I am thankful for many things, and Glenn this forum is definitely one of them!

    Happy Turkey day ya'll!!!

  5. I have no clue what it really is but my guess is that it is used to either grab or pull moving lines dealing with logging? I think I remember something close to this being used in some old logging footage where the guys were trying to direct and adjust the chains pulling up the fallen timbers. Thats my guess....I hope someone around here can give you the real use...I am curious to know too. Thanks for posting it!

  6. I am in no way a knife maker, and have never attempted one before. But I have seen and read a lot on knives made from files. I have a few relatives who I think would love a simple knife for Christmas. And I would really like the experience to try it.

Can you guys give me anything to keep in mind when I begin this project? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

  7. I am looking at putting together some demonstrations specifically geared towards the Boy Scouts of America, and Future Farmers of America(FFA) groups in the area. The FFA group here at the school where I teach has asked to do something for them in the near future.

Has anyone out there done any work with these organizations in the past? If so what did you do, and any suggestions you may have would be a great help.

I am thinking of flint strikers for Boy Scouts(maybe get them to make their own?), and nails for the FFA....

    Thanks.

  8. Elf.
There are several groups in Virginia that you could gain some knowledge from. I am a member of several of them. if you go to Blacksmith Guild of Viriginia - Home and go to the links page you can find a good listing of the ones around. You can also search ABANA for the affiliates, but there are some top notch groups out there who choose not to be affiliated!

yesteryearforge: your generosity has helped out a bunch of new smiths over the past years...cheers to you sir!
