  1. Well its all done just going to add a ring around the very top to help hold it all together. will forge some more holders when I finish moving and my shop is up and running. I need to shim the one railroad spike i used an existing hole in the timber and it was a little too far from the anvil only got a small bite on the edge of the base. The hammer holder his a control box mount for a railroad terminal box made by wrrsc (western railroad supply co) Ill stop posting pics now!
  2. For anyone interested there is quite a bit of info from fellow members on the arm and hammers in the "anvil identification" thread a couple below this one.
  3. great looking anvil and a wonderful family story to go with it. those are the best kind of tools to own! All my smithing tools are form my grandfather and a few from my great grandfather. I just got an arm and hammer and it looks just like yours.
  4. Quickly sanded the surface of the stand and got it nice a level. then attached the railroad track straps. They work great in their original shape and fit the anvil base nicely. I was one lag bolt short however. I still have to drill and drive in 2 railroad spikes on the adjacent base corners to keep the anvil from rotating the other direction as well as hold it tight to the surface of the stand.
  5. Thanks frosty and thomas for the great advice. The piece of walnut is so nice looking i wish i could use it for something! would it hurt my setup to have it under the anvil? seems like it would allow all the downward force to be evenly distributed across the cut faces of all the timbers. I found these today in some of my junk i think they are railroad track hold downs. thinking i could run a lag bolt through the looped ends and another at the notched end to keep it snug up against the anvil base?
  6. Finally had some time to make an anvil stand today. It is made from the cross beams from the tops of power poles. I had a hole stack of them lying around. I still have to secure the anvil. I also have a flat piece of walnut for the top.
  7. post pics if you can. how is the condition, rebound?
  8. thank you for these they are great. whats the specs on your arm and hammer Mullin
  9. awesome thank you. I will print them out and ad them to my binder of manuals and vintage ads for all my old equipment
  10. I have seen many ads for trenton and peter wright as well as Vulcan, I also own a few misc. copies of those. I am looking for any original advertisement ads for Arm and Hammer anvils. If anyone has some pdf scans or extras they want to sell let me know or post Them up for all to enjoy. I have searched through here but did not find any.
  11. yes it was. However, I didnt make the dagger aaron cergol did. I don't think it will be an issue being the blade is so thick nearly 1/4". It turned out just how i expected, he really does superb work.
  12. gotcha I figured that's how it is was used for but wanted to make sure. Guess I should have not called it a hammer, haha. I have about 15ish more to hang.....lots of different swages
  13. This is one of my grandfathers old hammers. I just re-hung it today and I was wondering what its called and the use of it with the pattern on the face? Also who is the manufacturer?
  14. Thank you for the historical information seems like a low production number compared to others like trenton. Maybe that i why I don't see many out here. IMO tracking down the historical information is one of the best parts about restoring this old equipment and bringing back in to service. I found out so much about my grandfathers power hammer just by calling up Little Giant, and no price would ever get it from me! I just moved into my new home and the garage isn't finished yet so not all my equipment is here yet or running, its driving me nuts to say the least I need to build faster! so here are some more poser pictures with some of my tools made by Aaron Cergol. A farmers dagger, a 4 pound rounder, and a punch handle is cocobolo, I made the sheath from an old pistol holster. made a para-cord lanyard with a stainless shackle at the end.
  15. appreciate the information! I need to get that book. how many Arm and hammer anvils were made overall? what's the highest serial number? I don't see as many of them around like some of the other manufacturers
  16. can anyone tell me if the AIA book gives an exact date for this anvil or just a range SN 49586
  17. I cleaned it up a bit today after I got home. I love all the character and forged marks from the factory. I read they were forged with steam hammers here is a pick of the steam hammer forge finish. I left some of the paint on it, I like the look of it that way. perfectly flat not one dished area.
  18. I think that happens alot. case in point the guy i bought this anvil from had very little interest in smithing, just loved collecting anvils?!. he was into hot rods and car building so he occasionally used them for that. Everything I got from my grandfather has clearly been well used minus the power hammer. He cared for all his equipment well, because he made a living with it so its still in good working order. I think some of the hammers are even my great grandfathers based off the markings.
  19. thanks. it will last my lifetime and more I think. it's a solid workhorse
  20. yes, I have heard about him. he tried to buy the arm and hammer I just got (according to the seller). the sr guy came to view the collection when it was close to 100 anvils. the guy I bought from didn't care for his business practices, nor has anyone else I've spoke to. I know where he is located my family still lives down in sr. I don't know anything about him or what he has just what I have heard from other people. he has some ads on craigslist. have you bought stuff from him?
  21. Prices are pretty inflated here in california as well and sellers are not budging. I got lucky i guess and finally found an Arm and Hammer from a friend came with a few hardies @ 208 lb for 600$ it was more than i wanted to pay but i have been looking for one like it a long time, and its in great condition.
