i think any thing more than $1-1.50 pound is to much but then i'm a little cheap the ones i have bought for me or my friends never cost more than 1 buck a pound if you were in jersey i could put you on to a guy that has a few anvils inthe 100 - 170 pound range most were under the 200 range
the best advice is to tell every one you meet that your looking for anvil and such you never know whats kicking around in ones shed, barn, garage,and yards

may be its some type of bog iron but then again im not an expert but i've seen bog iron laying around for years that really aint rusting bad i know they used bog iron for stuff on old ships like rivits and washers

in my opion 80 is high evenfor good one (unless its huge)but then again it would really depend on were you are located in this world were i live these pop up all the time i just bought 6 vises a week or so ago for 150 but 2 were perfect and out of the other 4 i can make 2 out of them but its alot of work to get them in working order

i'm glad to here hes asking questions my prayers are still with you up there to make a full and fast recovery

it should work really anything that can hold a fire and route a blast of air into the fire would work the tube there maybe a little small for most people but it should get you started my first forge i made was out of a top of a propane tank that i put a 2" tee in the bottom i would just look for a larger pan or some thing to set the torque converter in to so that way when you got the fire going if a spark jumps out it will land in the pan and not on the ground

looks as if you put some thinking and time into the anvil and it turned out well i like it you did a great job

6 post vises and a handled fuller fowolled me home tonight i sold one to my buddy so theres only 5 in the pic some are ok some good for parts i'll see what is usefull i think maybe 2 of them are ok and will be getting rid of them and any parts that are ok if anyone is close and looking for one or parts let me know

not that does it i have to go buy or make a power hammer to try this thanks guys now i have a new reason to spend money :D

what you guys forgot about useing a soup can to fix your rusted out tail pipe

the draw bar is the hex head that sticks up through the front pully just loosen that hex it will raise up a few inches dont unscrew all the way at first then hit the hex head down you should se the drll chuck slide down then unscrew the reast of the waythe chuck will come out ebay has cheap collets. collets can range from a few dollars apieace to 20-30 dollars as there are good ones then there are real precision ones but you don't need those ones with that machine unless you are trying to be with in tens of thousands of an inch

well ken first welcome aboard me personaly i like the stump really just a butt peace of a tree hardwood i use oak most people say around theanvil should be knucle height with your arm at your side i like it higher as my back tends to bother me if i lean over to much

chyancarrek i wish you luck there i have tried the gf moving in thing with kids and stuff it just never worked for me she just didn't under stand the dirty stuff i do as i do a lot of welding and machining work oh and my littlemachine shop area is only 10 feet from the washer and dryer so this could really be my fault i should have maybe aranged thing differently i just couldnt understand why she would get made when she was doing wash and there was chips flying around and smoke and she really hated pulling metal spinters out of here foot also i guessnow that i think about it maybe i am all those bad words she calledme any way hope the kids enjoy what you do and maybe they will learn it from you

looks like you got some good stuff there torsion bars are nice i don't find them here like i use to and as to your other post the torsion bars are spring steel from the front of old cars and 4x4 trucks

on thing i forgot about the vise its huge its 25 inches high and weighs 80 pounds and i would love to see the anvil size that would have a 2 inch hardie to fit this if thats what the idea was and how tall you have to be to use it or like thomas said a step ladder

saddleboat that looks like a old boring bit or boring mole like they use for big pipe or tunnels through dirt like going under roads i would bet that it is really hard

i'm not sure what looks cooler the anvil or the toolbox mounted on the 3 point hitch but i guess as this is a blacksmith forum i should go with the anvil

pickedup this vise today found on craigs list at first i thought it was repaired legvise with the leg missing but after seeing it it was made the way it is the plate that looks to be a repair is fited into the leg as it was made that way the guy i got it from said his dad got it from the brooklyn navy yard many years ago if anyone knows the make or what the proper name would be i would like to know anything about it

for the hose i use the expanding alumminum vent pipe got it at homedepot in the stove pipe section

welder i guess you and i are lucky to live here for this reason anyway crammers is now making you sign a wavier but tommy still takes good care of me for what ever i want

this what i do i find the guys who bring the stuff in also watch for the guys picking up metal out of garbage and from repair shops those guys are selling to those big guys and tell them what you are looking for and that way you can bypass the scrap yards i think the scrape yards are paying around $4 hundred so if you top that price they will sell it to you and keep an eye out for things you need

it will help if click on "User CP" at the top of the page and edit your profile to show your location that way there may be some one in your area that may have one or give some good ideas were one maybe as for ebay most go for way to much money in my opion then again i'm cheap and think that 150 is to much for an anvil unless its biggggg as for what you pictured there there nice anvils had used one this past sat at a demo and it was nice and quiet i have found a few on craigslist for less then 125 bucks bought both of them and ebay is world wide so shipping my cost alot and with ebay every triples in the last 5min
just checked it out on ebay it says it 70 pounds for $299 thats more that $4 a pound plus $85 shipping not that anvils sell per pound but the ones i bought are in the 150-170 range i paid $100 for a 140 pound peter wright and $125 for 170 pound fisher
