Welcome, Levi. Sounds like you're off to a good start

Thanks, Bruce. Might take a look sometime if I'm in the area. Was hoping for heavier stuff. I guess we just aren't blessed with those type of yards in this neck'o'the woods. LOL

I finally got around to reading this. Good Suff!! I plan to make such an entry in my cell phone and encourage my loved ones to do the same. Thanks, Bobby, albeit late, but this will bring it back to the present for a while at least Thankfully I have not needed it yet.

I does appear to be a casting, given the parting lines. If its good steel and it works, use it, is my philosophy. Works for my anvil cut from mild steel plate :)

I second those thoughts Rich. Like I said before, I also had a good teacher . I may have got lucky on the first attempt but it wasn't a breeze, to say the least. Lots of factors to take into consideration. Like Rich says, Its not a "beginner" project

Has anybody heard of L&K Scrap Metals? I just saw it the other day while going East on I-80 headed toward the Bluffs. Dunno if they just buy or if they sell too. Gonna make some calls but thought I would throw this up here anyway!

The term, "perfect scroll", may come from the concept of the spiral of squares. I'd have to dig out my Trigonometry text to explain it fully but loosely translated, (and I may be using the wrong term) the spiral or square starts out at a value of 2 and for each revolution the spiral enlarges in size as well as diameter (I think!) by the square of the previous revolution. You can take it further and get into fractals but then it gets just plain gawdy if you ask me LOL

Welcome Wim,
It sounds like we have a lot in common. I just started a few year back but still consider myself a novice at age 51. I have been metal working for many years but only discovered "real" smithing in the last couple. I made my own forge tho its a gasser and made a powerhammer. (Bad back makes this a luxurious necessity ) This (and that "other place" ) are great learning tools. Join the chat too when you can. If for no other reason, its a fun place to talk with other smiths about stuff that sometimes even involves blacksmithing LOL.

Parphrased News report:
"A man was recently detained while boarding an airplane. Found in his possession was a compass, a slide rule, and a pair of dividers. It was later discovered that the man was from the elite group known as Al-ge-bra. He was detained for transporting weapons of math instruction."
Yes, this is a joke, but its not too far off base from where this world is going :( -
Not sure about Europe or other parts of the US for that matter, but here in Omaha, Ne 3 phase is rather a pain to get access to unless you are in an industrial or comercial area. Even then it can be a chore I've heard. There are phase coverters available or can be built but not sure of their efficency($$??). Anyway, good luck on the install. Looks like it will be a fun tool to have:)
