Elemental nailed it. Keep the fire deep and limit the air, charcoal burns faster than coal. A tip on keeping your fire from spreading to the outside charcoal is sprinkle the charcoal you don't want burnt with water or just keep a good gap between your fire pot and reserve fuel.

It really depends on how much water and how long it's soaked. Personally I just leave it dry, if anything is see the steam splitting the charcoal, increasing the surface area to burn, which would increase heat BUT greatly shorten fuel life.

If nothing else, cut the length down, weld on square stock for a hardy hole, and shape the face into different hardy tools!

You are really only limited by your imagination, your budget, and the time you want to put into it. I personally would make it into an anvil. However, you could round it into a giant horn, cut slits in or rough up the face and use it to apply textures to projects. Heck, you could weld some round pins on it and use it as a bending jig. Truly an unlimited amount of possibilities.

Thanks Eddie! Yeah I lucked out with that find, but I'm sure you can find a busted one or something similar. My initial plan was to weld fan blades onto a bicycle rim and fabricate a shell for it, but then the floor drying fan came along and I went with that!

You can't see it in the pic I posted, but on the workbench my brother and I salvaged the crank and gears from a mountain bike we cut up. We are working on a multi gear setup for the fan. The fan is actually an old floor drying fan he pulled out of a school demolition job he was on, the motor was fried but the fan blades were fine! Cleaned it up, gutted it out. BAM! Couldn't afford a buffalo but this has more meaning since it was a project :) Here's a closer pic:

You can always get a wireless security camera or do what I do and have an alarm on the door that is so loud it wakes up half the block!

Mine isn't nearly as pretty as yours. I made mine out of a floor drying fan with a motor that didn't work. So I threw on my own "hand crank" :)

There hasn't been a post in over a month regarding anvils, aside from some guy wanting $700 for an unmarked hornless anvil. What sort of luck are you getting? Nevertheless, I messaged the seller on Ebay asking how he knows for sure this is a steel anvil. -Grymm

Hey guys, I was trolling around Ebay and found a 77lb anvil for about $200, however I have heard of a lot of scams/bs on ebay. This is what is posted fora pic and info: 75# ANVIL HARDENED FORGED SOLID STEELROUND HORN -NEW Not Cast Iron- but hardened and tempered STEEL, it also has a beautiful ring to it!! Rockwell hardness: 52 Hardy hole: approx 22 x 22 mm Round hold: approx 20 mm Heat treated Top: 11" x 4-5/8" Horn:; 6" Base: 10" x 7" So what do you think? Is $200 a decent price? Should I trust this is steel? Needing a little help here... it's my first anvil purchase (upgrading from my makeshift plate of Hardox 400)
