  1. I need to make some flint and steel strikers and and having a problem finding stock at the right price... I was thinking about using something like Kasenit on some mild(which I have tons of and I cant bring my self to cut up any files for something as simple as a striker, any one have opinions or insight about this?
  2. lol, no problemo, just get yerself a fancy bananna suit and some lead BVDs to go with the radiometer
  3. LOL, Frosty, that maybe true, but to quote my math(math for non math major 101) prof, a calculator is the greatest mathmatical adavancement, but it is useless unless you know how to get where yer going(with your calculations) with out it, but I have yet to get *bad* information from anyone here yet although I always try to verify any ideas or at least apply my own "backyard engineer" knowlege of what doesnt work and what wont get me hurt or burn down the ranch... It all goes to the give a man a fish/teach him to fish thing. Besides you got to have somekinda brain, you landed in AK. ;)
  4. Once again, Frosty and Jayco, you tha man, I hope someday to pick up only a small percentage of what yall know... Thanks for sharing, I know I learn something everyday off this site.
  5. But are they *REALLY* radioactive, or is that just what people say....
  6. Clips? From a train/rail road track? Do ya have any pictures?
  7. Lol,perhaps thats why all the fussing and complaining, which lead to the "cheap help" post which was a much quieter helper.
  8. So anyway... Yeah frost I was thinking a rotor, I got a pair laying around the yard somewhere and found a pipe that fits right over the hub and a little bit o furnace cement on the holes.... just a thought
  9. I had an overwhelming burning desire to make a screwdriver that wouldnt stand out in a 18th century reenactment so I could take apart the smokepole to clean it, started with propane torch and a $40 anvil from craigslist, now I got a coal forge and a few more self made tools, still growing.
  10. In addition to being a mild mannered forge poker(that I just banged out) this little doodad came out of the need of a third arm about 4.5 ft long that comes out of my back so I devised the next best thing out of 1/2 square stock that was left over from the poker, and I had to close up the handle loop a little.
  11. What do you think about a truck sized rotor set into a plate with firebrick around the rotor?
  12. Those are wonderful suggestions that I wish I would have logged onto here before I fired up the forge this morning as I found out the hard way that the little hair dryer didnt have enough cfm to heat up the 3/4" round I was playing with although I burnt up WAY more coal than I did yesterday and cutting out the notches in the sides helped alot too. A flat top forge is in my plans but I think I may put together a gas forge next, I just wanted to get something going asap. faculty-The School of Hard Knocks
  13. While I am firmly against bondage of any sort, I think it may be preferable to trying to convince my wife to hold the end of a 3/4 piece of stock 12 ft long so the tripod forge doesnt tip over, then try and explain that time is of the essence when working stock like that out of my pitifully undersized forge. :p
  14. I don't have too much experience in the metal fab world, but as having spent many years turning sticks into house frames and decks I'd always pencil out my layout with lengths and angle degree on a 2x and have found it works as well with soapstone and metal so even though I had the general plan in my brain, I could double check my numbers before I cut.
  15. Here it is, after many weeks of not having enough time to finish it, my new(from scrounged parts) that I built for less than 10 bucks, it might not win any contests but it works well for me and it made metal hot enough to pound into submission.
  16. Lol, hehe, at least it dont have to worry about getting the walls sooted up. Sooner or later I'll get it under roof.
  17. Nice shop Justin, I'm officially jealous, as I hit a speed bump in my shop construction($$$$).
