i dont really want to do the clay spencer one but maybe "borrow" some ideas the one i saw was a little more simple if i remember right will look into them more though and see how many different designs he had

macbruce i was thinking of removable dies and i knew when i was puting those links here that af and ifi are like oil and water they dont mix which is why i mentioned they were from af. Right now i am looking at the placement of the tire more than anything else then the spring style dies i had taken for granted were removable
Regardless of the politics, links to anvilfire are not allowed to be posted here.

this topic is for people who want to build a tire hammer (like me) and want to see all the possible different designs out there for ideas on how to make their own. the style of tire hammer i am looking for i havent been able find pics or plans of anywhere. last year sometime i went to a bladesmtihs meeting at the Haywood Community College and i saw a tire hammer there that they said they had had a class and made 35 or so there. i emailed the contact person who got that ABS meeting around and havent heard from him at all.
thanks for looking

ok i had a peice of 1-1/4 sq. tube and it was too big so it was ground on to make it fit but still doesnt my anvil i am trying to fit is a 236 lb pw. i might grind the shank down some more if it still wont work welll, LOOK OUT ANGLE IRON.

Made my first guillotine today found some 5/8 flange about 5 in wide cut 3- 3x4 in pieces out of it and 2- 1x4in pieces. Ground the 2 1x4s with a slight taper on one side then deep welded it up and did the same with the 3x4s and the last 3x4 i welded some 1x1 angle iron about 4 in long on it and did a lot of grinding to make it the die i wanted. One problem that i hadnt thought of was its made of mild steel though as long as i hit hot metal it shouldnt be a problem to me. will be finding out exactly what size square tubing i need for my hardie hole.
any way thanks for looking. critics welcome as this is likely not gonna be my only one made

tiny tongs
in Tongs
specialized pliers none-the-less but pliers all the same :P with me just starting these i have already toyed with the idea of cutting grooves in the jaws and selling them as pliers maybe make some scrolling minis and flatten the tip a little and call them tweezers
-
ok makes sense sorry hadnt thought of it that way but if you could attach them to the jaws you could get a biggergap if needed i havent done anything yet with my solid one
-
if you dont mind my asking. What keeps those forks in the vise? it seems they would move if you had it open very far unless there was some sort of catch on one or both sides

i like the handle blade combination looks great.

here is a pic of our house this was taken more from the road then i was thinking of placing whatever i throw together. A yurt cost around $7000 for a 20 ft one. i was going to put a google earth image here but its so old i decided not to
vaughnT i know what you mean and that was one reason i was considering the gazeebo cause if i ever decide to quit smithing we can put chairs table and a fireplace in it but ah well like i have said big dreams
-
A yurt certainly looked good,
saw my first add for one of them just the other night havent checked prices though and they look a little too flammable for me thats one reason for metal nonflammable thanks for yalls replys

lol i can kinda sneak the price dad owns a metal building biz and i will probably use leftover building componets to build it with

my dream shop is a gazebo. forge in the middle and all work areas around it hood out the middle of the roof. the only problem is my mom doesnt want another building at our place. Dad wants a tractor shed besides our garage which doubles as workshop for dad and plane storage is just slightly shorter than our house (guessing 100 ft not completely sure) and around 40 ft wide. maybe i am dreaming too expensive but in my mind its bricked up about 3 ft and either open or with plexiglass skylights for about 4 ft then some sheeting about 2 ft then the roof. i would like it to be around 20 ft in dia.
wishful thinking hope to be reality sometime
lol pics in my mind sorry no drawing even yet
feel free to leave comments as this might end up being a real shop sometime -
would someone not use short hand for tfs please

rhett +1 brian i since i saw the vid on youtube i have modified a 17$ hammer but one question aproximatley how wide is the nearly flat spot in the center mine is about a 1/2 in and after using rhetts i think its too small
-
when i was at the abs knife show the eastern US one guy that demoed guards said that when he does them he gets a tiny ball peen. I am guessing 4 oz the 24$ ones at lowes and uses the ball side and spreads the steel so it fits super tight on the hidden tang. he used a hammer and a piece of wood with a slot cut in it to pound it on the tang is how tight it was, like so i aint a good drawer in paint but the small circles are the ball peen strikes
-
rgraff o1 was suggested to me by http://www.popsknifesupplies.com/ as the best forgable knife steel that he knew of in his opinion i have finished one knife so far from it now i am a complete noob still on knives but i like the way it works and would like to get some more where did you buy the round from? my knife is here good luck

i was at an old tractor day in saluda SC. the first sat. of this month there were 2 smiths from this guild there one had made a rr spike head in the shape of a cows head. the senior smith gave a buddy of mine the split head so he could try it. i was wondering if there would be any pictures of one to be able to be posted here as an idea for others
