In the early 1900's till 1990's the sugar mills that processed cane were quite prominent as agriculture was the main business here. When the Clean Water Act cam into effect in the early 70's, some of the mills shut down. With it the anvils, from what I have gathered, were taken by the employees. I have seen a few pop up on Craigslist now and then. All of them are in the #250lb range. Also, cowboys were quite common among the upcountry people, mainly the Portuguese, and I have located a few anvils that the owners will not part with. All seem to be in the #250 lb. range also. I got the Northstar from my sons friend. My son saw it under a mango tree at his friends house and asked them if he could have it. They said sure. He loaded it up in his Nissan mini truck and surprised me with it. It wasn't tied down solid so it slid on the bed and dented the tailgate bad. I wasn't bothered by that at all, because the Northstar was gorgeous. I made a wrought iron tailgate for him. Anyway, I'm still looking for more anvils. It is an incurable disease.
  2. OOPS, 2 - 0 - 26, I MEAN 250 LBS. BTW, it is my favorite and I got it for $600. When I saw the double horn on craigslist, i called the guy immediately and told him I would buy it. He said he got it a few years back for over $1000 bucks. I have a 280 lb. Swedish Northstar, a 250 lb, Hay budden, a 130 lb. hay budden, a fisher 58 and 19 and a crap load of mini anvils. Mostly, I use the Northstar and Peter Wright. used to use the 130 hay budden a lot. The Northstar is great. I love anvils, something about them. Sometimes I just go outside in the garden and look at them, wire brush and oil em. They have a spirit in them, each one different. Richard Postman told me that there's a cure for this anvil-itis that I have, it is called DEATH. Gotta go and pamper my anvil, talk to you later.
  3. I thought I would share this anvil with all of you. I got this Peter Wright Double Horned anvil a few months ago. It weighs 260 lbs. Rings like a church bell. I talked with Richard Postman and he told me that these have been coming to the states during the past few years. Someone is shipping them over from Europe or something like that. i only saw this anvil in Anvils in America in a Peter Wright advertisement. I never saw one of these in all the hundreds of searches I have done looking for this particular anvil. If anyone has info, input or has one of these, I'd like to hear from you.
  4. I have a 280 lb. North Star and I love it. I also have a 130 lb. Hay Budden. I like the North Star better and to me it performs better, more mass. Also, Postman says that he knows of only two North Star Anvils, looks like we have some rare anvils there buddy. I live on Maui. This anvil came from my sons great, great grandfather. So he would have been born in the late 1800's but I hear the only reference to these anvils in a sale brochure was back to 1930. Who knows how old they are, but they are great anvils.
  5. What about a stainless steel sink for a small forge, it already has the grating hole on the bottom and is threaded for an elbow. I was going to make one for knife making. Would I have to line it at all? The sink cost me 20 bucks from a garage sale. Thanks.
  6. I can't find any info on the North Star Anvil. Anyone know about it? I just ordered the Anvils in America book but any other hands on or information on this anvil will be much appreciated.
  7. I just got one of those "North Star" Anvils. The letters are a little bit more legible on mine. There is the small star above the lettering that says, "Made in Sweden" and below that it says 286 lbs. The bottom is rusted but it exhibits the same hollowed out base. No numbers are legible. I can hardly wait to test it out. I've been using a relatively "small" anvil, a Hay Budden of 130 lbs. I say small because the North Star dwarfs it. Something about anvils, what is it guys, very addicting, gotta have them. It's almost a spiritual thing, they just feel good to be around.
  8. Just got an anvil and it has on it Made in Sweden, 286 lbs. Above the Made in Sweden is a small start, 5 sided, about 1/2 inches across. I saw some reference to it in a search and it is supposedly made of a one piece charcoal steel, whatever that is. Great ring to it and it looks like a classic anvil, much like a hay budden, which I also own. Can anyone shed some light on this swedish anvil? Thanks all.
