Being that you are from Tennessee my self I recommend a very simple solution Bodock stump/ Osage orange/ hedge apple tree stump there is only a few other stumps /trees that are harder than them . and band the top, middle with double or wide bands.
they work very well for anvil stumps also .

It's a jeweler's ring sizer. With one of those, a jeweler is able to make rings and arc segments of a very specific size for bracelets, earrings and necklaces. The top would also double as a small anvil.
You have Nailed it ! it is a Jewelers Bench top anvil for repairs of different items such as rings, bracelet, and such my wife's aunt is a jeweler and has one for just that .

Hello Folks,
Many of you know me as Sam Cro While on BSF= Bladesmith Forums I have been struggling to find a good Forge Name for my work and have not come up with anything at all.
Well after a Very Long Time it has finally hit me as to what to call my Forge :
The New Name is " 13 & On" The Makers Mark will be a 13 with a circle around the number
The reason behind the Name is that for 13 generations of Black Smithing AKA (Comer Jackson) "Poppa Jackson" was from Quebeck TN. and one of the Best round here . It had skipped 2 generation and I married the granddaughter of the last of the 13th generation Black Smith and "We"
(My Wife and I) are the Next Generation thus the "On" part of the New Forge Name .
We will be working on a new site to showcase our work and have a show coming up this week where we will be announcing our New Forge Name and Products . :D B)
Best Regards

The Premium Exhaust Valve with Colmonoy 6, which is a Chrome-Nickel alloy. Powdered Colmonoy is then carefully welded to the valve using a plasma welding process designed by MaK engineers.
And you can read more here :
http://marine.cat.com/cda/files/976743/7/Exhaust%20Valves_2011.pdf
they also could be Stainless steel as Cat also uses it in many of their engines although it is a very high grade of SS and very Hard . they also use induction hardening and Case hardening on their valves it really depends on the engine the valves came out of . the are meant to bend rather then shatter to save the motor from further damage when catastrophic failure happens in a engine Cat does Not use Filled or Hollow or cored Valves their valves are All Forged Steel of some type determined by the Engine they are meant for.
Yes I know for sure as I have worked on a Ton of their engines both in Heavy Eq, and Marine engines while at Cat .... If it is Not a Cat it is a Dawg ! <Grins>
Best of Luck and good Forging

Nice score on the 4340 HF. It is a high tensile chrome-nickel-molybdenum Steel. Highest-stressed crankshafts, gear components, connecting rods, axle tubes, bolts, flanges, turbine rotors, etc.
My guess is it come from a Depo rebuilding shop where they refurbish and refit tanks and such it is already annealed for you that is good as it can be cut and shaped much easier. I am with Thomas looks like some awesome dies and hardies sitting there.
