  1. thanks, yeah i told her to maybe put something ont he silver bits. she has a farm house so it will fit nicely. thanks,im going to try and do a similar one with more vine like protrusions for my stair way as i have some height to play with. think il need some wider stock to start it with though.
  2. this was made for a friends wedding present. wasnt so sure on the finish i did in the end. the black is matt paint and the silver is just bare metal. think i needed to be a bit more refined with it......
  3. if you get a wonky twist like this, i use a leather or copper hammer to tap it back into place. then you dont ruin the twist its self by re aligning it. and another cheat i sometimes use is circlip pliers to do the little curl over of your end, this turns out alot rounder as long as you get a good heat on it. bit of a cheat but it works. (obviously use the fully straight circlip pliers and not the bent ones or the cheap ones with flat tips.)
  4. ive done forks before but they are toasting forks so they are bigger probably, its just right for toasting crumpets on an open fire, try splitting the end of you stock into three instead. this will give you a thiner prong and allow you to have them closer together for those pescy meatballs! i like the 2nd half curve of the hook its got a good flow to it. try keeping the flow going a little more round even though you want it to go in to the straight, as you have a bit too harsh an angle where it meets the straight, unless of course thats what the intension was and in which case i appologise and il be quiet! :) just keep practicing on the time in the fire. as soon as its hot know where you are hitting right away, dont get it out of the fire then decide as you'll lose heat and so you will burn your metal with the extra heats. (sorry if im telling you to suck eggs, but the hook looks like uve worked it alot.)
  5. yeah me too, i like waxing alot of my pieces, the metal comes out a bit more of a black sheen. but equaly i like just wire brusing like you have done, i like the pewter like finish it gives. i need to find some more wax though, which im finding difficult from everyday shops.
  6. thanks everyone! the shine i got by taking a grinder to it! simple but effective, then the duller shine i used a wire brush and some wet and dry paper. ive welded a loop on to the back and it hangs well off a good screw in the wall. think it would be good for outside if i were to put some sort of laquer on it, or in a big open barn so you dont catch on the mane as you walk past it!
  7. really like this, really nice simple design. what was the finish?
  8. this is my horse head i have made as a wall hanging. i was quite please with it, but have since made another and improved upon it. what does everyone else think? im a bit biased. untitled.bmp
  9. hey, when i started i used round stock to do S hooks etc, i found these an easier starting point as you dont have to worry about the metal twisting as it can do with flat stock when ur starting out. it then would help with the burning of the metal too, as hopefully ul complete in less heats. keep going it gets even more satisfying!
