eggwelder, those plates appear to be a access plate from a pressure vessel, possibly a boiler. good tough steel

started the day off at -8 but sunny and no wind. by noon was up to about 25 and quite pleasant outside for a change. we have been struggling to get to 15 for the past few weeks.

Hey Don,
Welcome to the site. Lots of info and fun here. Don't feel bad about being a farrier on this site, there are quite a few of us on here that are or have been farriers. It actually gives a head start on many of the skills involved.

i just got a chance to use this vise today and it is a treat. pretty easy and handy. it may end up as my go to vise.

jim,
i find i spend most of my time working from the side, so it works out pretty good for standing

Got my vise stand completed and vise mounted today.
the base is a 3/8 plate 29x19, 4x4 square tube, 29 inches long; 1 piece of 4x3, the table section was made from a 12x12 x1/8 plate. the leg had been cut off quite short so there is a 1 inch inside diameter pipe with a 3 inch piece of rr spike inside to give the leg support. the stand weighs about 200 lbs with the vise attached and can be moved with a hand truck. both stands are nearly the same for dimensions except for the height.

setlab,
i have one just like it except it has 4 inch jaws. i am in the middle of building a stand for it right now. i took it to a couple of different meeting and no-one has seen one like it before. like yours there are no markings to speak of. will post pic when get stand done.

interesting to watch. this guy has loads of equipment. i have a farriers vise that attaches to my anvil stand. i ised it when i was shoeing horses full time and have kept it. it gets almost as much use as my post vise. i have 2 post vises, 1 small machinist vise and the farriers vise. i dont think i could do half the things i do without it.

just the sound of my hammer

i believe #4 may be part of a broken knuckle pin. if so would be pretty tough stuff.
