A small knife that started out as 1/2 in. wire rope.

This was my first successful forge weld and only my second attempt at forge welding. Etched in hot vinegar for 30 min.

OUCH! I don't think 20 ft in 4 ft lengths would cost that much at Lowes. If I remember iwill check when I am there tomorrow. 

At my "local" steel supplier 2 hour drive 1 way I can get 20' 1/2" round a36 hot rolled for about $7. 1018 cold rolled is about $12 in the same size, cut 1 time If I need it cut more it is $1 a cut. This is the only new steel supplier in at least 4 countys. About all the big box stores sell a36 in shorter pieces but you pay dearly for it.

It would have to be a block anvil the same weight as the hammers.

Mine is missing the Quill lock bolt, but it is on the list to buy/make!

Your welcome, you could probably find one on the lathe also. The one on the drill press has all the adjustments and lubrication points listed. It is nice to have a piece of equipment made to be repaired instead of thrown away.

But yours is purdyer, and you have the belt guard. You can download the original owners manual in PDF, just google the model #.

Went to a friends house this weekend and was looking at an old drill press he had is his

garage. He asked will it fit in your truck, it needs a motor.  When I got it home  I found that the motor was full of dirt dauber wasp nests. Took the motor apart, cleaned it out and it runs great! It is missing the Quill locking clamp bolt and the spindle needs tightened but that in minor.

I made one last winter, I haven't used it much but when I do it is THE tool for the job. I am using 3" wide by 1/2" brush hog blades for the dies. I still have 3 left, need to make more dies so I can use it more. I put spacers on the top cross piece so I could make 3/4" fuller dies. I will have to get pics and post them.

 Well, my deep fryer fried, I don't understand why, it was only 10+ years old.

 I now have a double walled quench tank with a lid so I heated a rr spike in the forge, chucked it in the oil to warm it and hardened 2 blades. I had to use the wife's toaster oven to temper them.

i was really looking forward to experimenting with tempering in the deep fryer.

Hotshoe, I have been looking for a used toster oven for a couple of months now. When I didn't want one I saw them every where, now that I want one the few that I have found had near new prices on them.

Thomas, it is unknown steel from an old circular sawmill blade, It seems to temper well at 400. I have done it in the oven at work before but it is not an option this time. 

I was just wondering if the concept / my thinking was sound.

 I have a couple of knife blades ready to harden and temper. I have an old deep fryer that I plan to use to warm peanut oil for hardening. I do not have a toaster oven yet and my wife does not want me to use her oven. I was thinking of hardening the blades and then turning the deep fryer up to 400 deg. and after the oil reaches temp. putting the blades back in for a couple of tempering cycles.

Has anyone done this, or does it sound reasonable?

Slag, thanks for the oxalic acid idea. I am getting ready to mix some for cleaning quartz so I will try this on the files. You can also get iy from a lot of rock and crystal dealers.

It is mainly rust on them, on some it is minor and would probably come off with use and some it is pretty severe.

I recently found a bunch of files thwhat would be a good way to clean them?

Thomas, that is what the guy that gave it to me said though he did not have a name for it. There are two of them ,one is cracked all the way through the length of it, the one in the pic. is in good shape. do you know what the cast iron pieces with the holes in them are for?
