Mine is mounted on a plate welded to some 2" sq. tube set in 300# of concrete, it don't move! I love that I can work 360 deg. around it.

Thats what I thought. Thanks to all.

Is there a pickling solution that can be used on copper that will leave it bright and shiny?
I have used vinegar but the copper comes out a dull red color.I have watched videos where they show a piece after pickling that is bright but don't say whether they polished it or not.
Also can oxalic acid be used for pickling copper and brass? I have a couple of pounds left from cleaning quartz.

EDIT: Also junk day for my neighborhood is coming up and I will surely be scavenging anything and everything this year. I could probably find an old BBQ'er to forge in or other useful things.
Be careful on junk day and check your local laws. There are several cities here in Mo. where scrounging in peoples trash will land you in jail, no questions asked. Even when you have the landowners permission.

check out the 55 forge in the forge section, for an anvil any heavy piece of steel will work, even a sledge hammer head, Read through the forge and anvil sections for more ideas.

75# lakeside, the best one I have. I would use my 135# mousehole more but it is broke through the hardy hole.

Thanks for the feedback, suffice to say, I will be attempting NO repairs or dressing of it.
Was considering getting it shotblasted but I dunno if I should even do that.
I wouldn't do any thing to that beauty but polish it with hot steel.
Around here an anvil has sat in the scrapyard a long time if it has been there a week.
-
Probably not, but the noise of flight ops might drowned it out.

Catfisher, if we had a general location it would help.If you want a bigger anvil check your local scrapyard, I have a 100# piece of 2" thick steel I got for 35c/lb at the scrapyard. It works a lot better than a cast iron ASO.

Found this in the woods on a friends farm, 2 pieces of forge welded barge chain. He said that his dad brought them home in the "60's. 1 piece is 6.5' long, the other is 7.5' a total of 57 links, 1" to 1-1/8 " in diameter about 11" of mild steel in each.
The other piece is a raker tooth from a bulldozer I found on my new property. 1" thick and 3" wide
What would you do with this? No power hamer or striker.

It's a tool, we all modify our tools to work better for us. I see nothing wrong with Tex modifying his tools to work better for him. After all it is HIS tool, he can do anything he wants to with it.

I Always ask around and at the scrap yards when I go. The answer was always no, then a couple of months ago I took some scrap in and asked the owner if he ever got anvils in (for about the fifth time) he said I have one over right over there, $100. The wife went and looked at it while I was unloading came back and said give him the money. When I looked at it I say a 135# mousehole with the heel broke off, the rest of it was in pretty good shape. When I got it home it weighed 127# on the bathroom scale.,Less than $1/lb.

It may be on the lage size but you can always fill it with clay and try different shapes and sizes of firepots untill you decide what you like/need.
-
Looks good. You can always use a blowdrier or other type of blower untill you find what you want.

I am moving tomorrow and will not be able to do any smithing for several weeks.I will not have internet access for a while either (except at Mc D's or other places) but I will tune in when I can and when set-up I will catch up!
-
I haven't tried the download yet, my connection is weak. I will try later when I am in town. Could you give more info on the anti-scale treatment?
-
Well I have a 6# sledge with a short pipe handle but I was working as maintenance in a food factory at the time and needed a bigger hammer I could take out into the production area. They wouldn't allow wood handled tools in the production area, but there were wood pallets every where. Go figure.

16 x 12 looks good when it's empty but believe me, it will fill up quick! that is what I have now. A forge, couple of anvils, postvise and a work bench or 2 and you will wonder where all that room went!
-
You make me sick! All the anvils around here are priced like they are made of silver!

I broke down and bought a lakeside anvil yesterday. In very good condition, about 90-95% rebound, I paid too much for it but it is the best anvil that I have been able to find around these parts. Unfortunately it is supposed to rain for the next several days so I will have to wait to try it out. Marked 75# and weights the same on the scales S/N is 151601 could some one tell me if this is a Hay-Budden, Trenton or other maker, and possibly the year it was made ?
Thank you -
I need more space but I am looking for a place to move to and space for a new smithy is one of the primary features I am looking for!
Do your anvils ever get bored?

Yes, mine are pretty bored now to. Recently moved, don't have a shop built yet and no place to store them safely at home. They are stored where I work.
