  1. Red Top Mountain State Park in north GA has a Bloomery Furnace. I've not seen it in action but I bet it's cool...uh...hot? http://www.friendsofredtop.org/Documents/FriendsFlier0705.pdf
  2. Cool. Glad it worked out for you.
  3. Ergoman - Are you describing 2 anvils or is the seller not sure what size anvil he has for sale?
  4. Took a little digging but I found it. eBay Store - Pacific Machinery and Tool Steel: Tool and Die Steel, Spring Steel
  5. Several articles that my sister laminated to a board. 3 generations of blacksmiths, my grandfather, father and 2 brothers. My grandfather at the anvil and my father at the forge.
  6. Here I am rescuing my grandfathers coal forge. See more pictures here...Excavation and Restoration
  7. This is a Southern Crescent that was in my grandfathers shop.

    Show me your vise

I'm just getting started. This was in my grandfathers shop. I put it up this morning.
  10. I'm new to blacksmithing too. I think the first tool I will try to make will be a nail header. Then I'll start making mails...drawing out, tapering, cutting on a hardy, brading the head... Alabama Forge Council : Artist Blacksmith Organization ===================================== EDIT: that link didn't work so I edited it. Lets see if it works now...
  11. Thanks Welder19. I couldn't have said it better.
  12. My supplier wouldn't do that for a n00bie hobbyist... I played with all kinds of fire yesterday. I got my Zoeller burner going and used the O/A a little. I can't wait to get home from work this evening.
  13. My neighbor came over tonight. We cut metal with fire! [Tim Allen] Oh oh oh! [/Tim Allen]
  14. I was told once that it started life as a boiler from a steam train. Maybe I should post it in "it followed me home"

  16. Are backflow preventers and flashback arresters the same thing?
  17. I'm definitely going to use extreme caution. My neighbor is a 30 year union construction worker and he teaches concrete form construction at the union hall. He told me that he has used a cutting torch many many times and that he would be more than happy to help me out. Also I'm a member of the local ABANA guild and I'm sure there is someone that would help me get started. I have read the first few chapters of Welding Essentials dealing with oxy/gas welding and cutting and I'm about to start reading Oxy-Acetylene Welding and Cutting by Harold P. Manly - Project Gutenberg and I'm not even going to try to hook the hoses up until an experienced torch user is here to guide me the first time. I'll be careful...
  18. Too late. I just blew $500 for a mid-grade torch and (full) tanks. $150 each for "customer owned" tanks and $169 for a Lincoln Electric kit from Home Depot. Now I just need somebody to show me how to use it. I ain't skeered...
  19. No. I put the 2X6 frame in there to keep it all together. I didn't want the bricks to fall out when we lifted it. The area underneath is where the ash falls. In the pics you can see me cleaning it out. It shouldn't be too bad. I'm only going to grind the rusty spots and replace the tuyere. Then put the bricks back with some refractory mortar. I want to use the one my grandfather used. I'll take more pictures as I go along...but I'm in no hurry.
  20. My grandfather was the village blacksmith in my hometown. After the shop closed my father moved the equipment to "the farm." The building burned down and we lost most everything. I think my brother has the anvil but I got 2 vises, a small Southern Crescent anvil and recently I moved the forge to my back yard. I'm going to attempt to restore the forge and set myself up a smithy. Click the link to see the pictures that I have taken so far. Excavation and Restoration
  21. As far as safety...whats the worst case scenario as far as "hey yall, watch this" that can happen with O/A equipment in the wrong hands? Strange-Looking Car Leads To Explosives Charges - Denver News Story - KMGH Denver 2 really good threads in IFI! http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/still-welding-o-oxyacetylene-2102/ http://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/f7/gas-welding-2687/
  22. I have about $400 burning a hole in my pocket and want a welder. Oxyacetylene just seems like the perfect mate to blacksmithing. I put oxyacetylene in the search function on this site and read all the threads and there are a couple of threads that really helped this n00b out. THANKS! I was wondering about the equipment. I'm thinking I will get a "mid-grade" torch set and just buy tanks from the welding supply place. Or would a port-a-torch be good enough for a newbie? I want to be able to do what ever I want and I'm afraid a port-a-torch will have limitations. Also I don't want to have to drive down to the supply house so often. What size tanks should a hobbyist get and how long will the gas last? General suggestions would be great. I'll be back later today with more specific questions.
  23. I'm with you on the Rex Price burners but I'm on a budget and for the same price as the shorty I got the burner and connection kit from Zoeller. Also I'm currently in the "learning" mode and have learned a lot about these burners from trial and error...and a lot of reading. I'm as excited about "tuning" this side arm burner as I am looking forward to actually using it to heat metal. Another plus for the Zoeller kits. I don't have to piece together the burner OR the plumbing...but I DO have to put it all together which adds to the learning aspect and the comprehension of how it all works. I got some Kaowool off ebay and some ITC100 from on line. Now to find a suitable forge body and put it all together... Good for you!
