  1. All I know is its a lot fun. I really enjoy working with metal.
  2. Well I had my first class forging yesterday. We straightened a bent piece of 3/8 round, made is square then done a taper and draw then made it round again. Used a piece of welding rod and done some freehand scrolling. Hot cut a horseshoe in half, then straightened it out and hot cut it lenght wise and made a heart on one end. Done some bending on the other end and made a hook on it. Now that i've got my feet wet I can not wait to start doing more. The smith I was working with told me that I had a knack for it. If y;all want to see some pics of the work I can add them later.
  3. http://dallas.craigslist.org/ndf/tls/2496833944.html Works well!
  4. Well I went and talked to someone and was told they do not have a Blacksmith. The woman I talked to told me she was going to have someone call me tomorrow. They are looking for a smith. To bad im not a smith yet. I told her I'm just starting out, and that maybe I could come and work in the shop when I get a little more experience. By the way the resturaunt had some of the best ribs I have ever ate. This is a picture of the front of the building.
  5. This heat wave couldnt have come at a worse time. I am in the process of building a 40x30 metal building for a guy. The burn ban we have includes outside welding. Welding in his shop it was 100+ when I stopped at noon today.
  6. Not sure what the humidity is here right now, but yesterday it was 115 at 6pm at my house. Today it was 106.
  7. Will do, I'm heading over there tonight. Hopefully I can talk to someone that can answer my questions.
  8. West of fort worth texas. In a little town called brock.
  9. I found an old blacksmith shop about 20 minutes from my house. Its in a center that has a resturaunt and a couple other shops including a working handmade saddle shop. I looked throught the window and seen the tools. They were covered in dust. I am going to talk to the resturaunt owner and see if they have a blacksmith that works there. If not maybe I can work out a deal with them on the use of the shop.
  10. Went to the monthly flea market here in town, hoping to find something to follow me home. I left the flea market wondering why they even call it that. There was nothing but a bunch of new crap from china and not much of anything else. I remember going there as a kid and it would take all day to walk it, now me and my family walked it in around an hour and 1 1/2 sections that used to have booths are now parking. Guess im going to have to range farther from home to see if I can get anything to follow me home.
  11. Got this book at half priced books yesterday. I am about 1/2 way through it, and finding it really informative. I can't wait to start making some of the projects in the book.
  12. I was thinking about building a fire pot using an old plow disk for the bottom. Then cutting a 2 1/2 to 3 inch ring off a piece of pipe that will be welded around the disk.
  13. I've welded for years so I dont think the heat is going to bother me alot.
  14. That was someone else . I was the one that posted about an NC anvil being worth $150. Thought I would come in here and do a formal introdution. Chuck Stone is teaching the class.
  15. Just thought I would introduce myself. My name is Alvin im 34 and just started getting everything ready to start some backyard blacksmithing. I live outside fort worth texas. I am taking a beginners blacksmithing class in July. I can't wait to get started, I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.
  16. I am happy with it. I can't wait to start using it. I am taking a class next month from a local blacksmith. I am really excited about starting this. I was a welder for a long time and still do some welding on the side. I got alot of pleasure from that and have always wanted to start doing some blacksmithing.
  17. Well I bought it and paid the full price because he delivered it to me.
  18. Thanks for the reply. I had the same thought, but figured something was better than nothing.
  19. Howdy, Im new to these forums. New to blacksmithing as well. I was wondering if this anvil is worth $150. It is a 70 lb NC tool short sugar anvil in excellant shape.
