I'm a professional welder. I have learn the techniques to weld cast iron with smaw and oaw. I'm agree with ciladog but you have to pre-heat and keep the welding zone hot during all the process (beetween each pass) and tempered down very slowly with some refractory material like. 50 celsius degrees on 1 hours to optimized the weld link. If your not sure to do it, ask a professional welder, but don't expect him about some guarantees about the solidity of the work. Because the cast iron is not destinated to be welded, it's only a repair and it's never done a good fusion beetween the rod material (smaw= ni-rod). In time it will be crack again near to the link zone. Yes you don't have lot to lose in trying.

Nice work! It's seem to have good running. How many pounds is the ram ? It's like a old style Beaudry hammer, Did you inspired about that Hammer style? I just finished to built one 100 pounds mechanical power hammer. It's a good feeling that 's provide to see all your work result. Congratulations and good work!

Here the connection system of the ram with this arms and ½ diameter coil spring. You see the rolls at the end of arms made with recycled steel caster than i can lubricate with grease nipples. Anvil is made by a 10 inch steel shaft, you can see the huge key hole, his weight: 518 pounds. The hammer Just wait to be installed correctly to be effective.

Ram guide is this flat bars of steel machined with v groove and welded on each side of flanges h-beam. They are 1 inch ¼ thick by 19 inchs long. I have drilled two hole in each plate aligned with the groove center to install grease valves. Two 1 inch steel square bars welded on each side of the ram and it's slide well.

It's the first time i see a champion in action. This mechanichal power hammer seem to be efficient. Bravo for your rebuilding job you do it really well.
