ridgerunner Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I'm new to the site and have been doing lots of reading. I used to work at a machine shop and when we heat treated parts we always left them a little oversize and ground them down to finish size after heat treating. Does the same thing apply to knives? For instance do you grind the bevel before heat treating? Do you sharpen the knife before heat treating? I don't want to make this more complicated than it is. Thanks in advance for the responses. Steve Sells Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 yes and for some of the same reasons. we do it for removal of de-carb zone, as well as prevention of warpage to the cutting edge. Unlike tool and die work, we don't have as much of an issue with shrinkage from the hardening process. Quote
dablacksmith Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 depends on the smith but usually you grind down to 1/16th if an inch for edge then harden, temper then finish grind slowly and keep it cool ...at least thats what i reccomend. Quote
