Quenchcrack
I have been reading that steel prices are declining much like oil prices. I haven't bought new steel in several years now but has anyone noticed the price drop at the steel warehouses? I am flat out of 1/4" and very low on 3/8" round and square. petere76
In Maine last week, .375 round stock, hot rolled, $ 0.79 per linear foot. This includes tax. I do my own pick up so there is no delivery fee.
medieval
I haven't compared steel prices relative to what they were last year, but I'm sure they are not going down as fast as gas prices. When I get a fabrication/forging job I always buy more than I need for the job. That way, if I make a mistake, I have extra. It also builds my inventory. I was talking to a friend of mine 2 days ago, he said scrap prices have dropped dramatically. Over $400/ton in September to $20/ton now. I guess the Chinese have cut back on construction since the olympics. I just pay what they want:(
dablacksmith
ive heard that as the distributor replaces stock the price goes down so around here the prices from place to place can vary as much as 30 %
polarbearforge
The prices at work for steel have dropped quite a bit. I've noticed it from almost all our vendors. As was noted, the price we get for the recycled materials has gone down. One of the aluminum places that paid out $1 per pound for aluminum is now paying $.35 per pound.
