Rich Hale
The striking scales on this piece are wooly mammoth molar fossils. The blade is ATS-34 professionally heat and cryo treated. The guard is 416 stainless. The hollow ground blade is about 4" long. The set of scales is now on another knife and will be posted as a finished piece soon. Edited November 28, 2008 by Rich Hale ... NOS
WOW! Rich that is beautiful! Did you stabilize that mammoth tooth yourself, or did you buy it like that? I've got some mammoth tooth sitting around the shop. I've just been waiting to make a blade worthy of it. I think you have given me the inspiration to start working on a new project tomorrow...like I need more projects Once again, great work Rich. Rich Hale
I don't do my own stabilizing. I really enjoy doing all steps in the process of putting a knife together including making may own damascus, engraving and leather work. However there is a couple of areas I choose to send to others for time and equipment reasons. One is of course stabilizing, the other is heat treating stainless steel for blades.
