Anybody have any idea how old this may be and is it something a blacksmith would use?

I dug this out of my yard. No handle.

It's 7 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide and 7lbs

Is that a square hole I see in the center of the ball end? If so this is not a hammer but probably a nail header.

I think that's just pitting, Brian. Yes, that's a older style of ball peen sledgehammer.

Clean it up, touch the outside with the slack of a Belt Grinder to take the roughness off. Decide after clean up, whether you have to Heat Treat it before putting a handle in it. Make it HAPPY, put it back to Work!!
