February 11Feb 11 I am in the process of starting my first set of rasp spurs. My question is, If you anneal the rasps before building the spurs, should you harden them when you are done? Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I get started. Thanks in advance!
February 11Feb 11 I don’t see hardening a spur doing much for the finished product- softer would be better so if it comes in contact with rocks/hard things it would bend before it breaks. Thats my personal opinion, but I’ve never used or worn spurs.
February 11Feb 11 Author That was kind of my thought, just wasn’t too sure. February 11Feb 11 Absolutely. Welcome to the forum, by the way. This is a great community full of resources and some great people. we love pictures, so if you are making spurs don’t hesitate to share them! I personally would like to see process pictures of making spurs. Seems cool. if you haven’t already checked out the “read me first” tab, it’s the golden guide to this large forum. Most things here are very worthwhile.
February 11Feb 11 Welcome from the Ozark Mountains. We even have a sub-forum https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/186-farriers-and-horse-stuff/ And like all types of pictures, as long as they are appropriate for a family oriented forum. February 12Feb 12 Good Morning, If you are going to make Spurs from a Horseshoe Rasp, may I suggest making a Little V-shaped Chisel, First. After you are finished, people are going to ask 'How did you get those little V-Marks, in the Spurs?'. A lot easier just to set the Chisel beside beside them. When people ask, you can say "That was the Hardest Part!! It took a lot of Patience". LOL Neil
February 14Feb 14 You may not need to anneal them if they are going right to the forge. I wouldnt harden them but would probably normalize them just for general purposes. Rasps can be high carbon steel and I would want to relax any forging stress just in case. A stress riser or cold shut could cause a crack or break down the road possibly. Have fun and send pictures :-)
