That's a nice haul!  I have a smaller version of this.  It has "Acciaio" stamped on the side. It means "steel" in all the romance languages, including Romanian. This piece of trivia is brought to you by fresh roasted black coffee.

Wait a sec ... why does a chinese cast anvil say "Acciaco" which means steel in Italian ?

Because when the Chinese started making these cast steel anvils a few years ago, they started by copying Italian anvils cast steel anvils that had "Acciaio" on the side. You can see pictures of these Italian anvils in Antonello Rizzo's Secrets of the Forge and The Blacksmith's Project Book.

Italian, yes. The other Romance languages, not so much:

  • French: "acier"
  • Spanish: "acero"
  • Portuguese: "aço"
  • Romanian: "oţel"
  • Romansh: "stal"
  • Catalan: "acer"

LOL.  Okay. I stand corrected.  This is what you call Google Translate user error.   I'm not at my sharpest until after my third mug.

Me neither, I pretty much live on coffee.

So when these chinese guys looked for a anvil pattern to copy; this one is the best they could find? I mean ... if you are going to copy an anvil pattern, take a london pattern or a north german double horn pattern for crying out loud, and put the holes in a location that is usefull ...
