Forge not getting hot enough? (part 2)

Featured Replies

Hey guys sorry if this post is in the wrong spot, but anyhows, about 2 weeks ago i made a post, spoke of my forge not getting hot enough, a goop residue over prolonged use and a few other minor problems, this is an update for Frosty (who requested some photos

"A pic of the interior through opening shortly after you light it so we can get a look at the burner flames. Then another after it's HOT. Another pic of the whole forge including the burners, burners behave differently and some have their own quirks.

A pic across the opening from the side against a dark background so we can see how much and what kind of dragon's breath it has. From the one pic it looks like more than I like but it's not a good angle. "

so here those are...
I will say, i had a much easier time heating my metal, i messed with it a little before hand & i may have just fixed it, then again I was using a much thinner steel, (like 10mm round bar)
(was making a ring to give the missus for valentines day, but if you got any other ideas for gifts id love hearing those too)
Goop still happened & Im sure it will always too - it just felt right forging this time? a feeling a I never felt while forging before and I wish I could explain it but it just felt proper?

(still haven't seen anything past orange though? Maybe a faint yellow but i also didnt heat up the ring to much to risk breaking it so it could be from my lack of effort?)
Thank you for reading!  ~ Ebin H

I am no gasser expert, i use coal, but is that stove liner in the bottom? Like the stuff you get for wood burning stoves at the local hardware store? The reason i ask is that when i first started my journey i built a gasser and put stove liner in it, it looked exactly like that. Kind of puffed up, then hardened and broke off in pieces.

It may get hotter with out the big hole in the side.

Other ideas, Russian roses are pretty easy to make.

Sure looks like the left burner is weak and the right one isn’t lit at all. Unless that’s somehow a photographic illusion, the first step is to figure out what’s different between the end burners and the center one.

The right burner is off & that left one is turned down via a valve near the top, i was mostly just using it to keep a sub section of my metal warm - My bad for not saying!

I have no idea, its one of those majestic forges but its older then sin...

I will look into Russian roses thank you!

Okay, I should've been more clear. If we're going to do a comparison between burners they all have to be burning at the same psi.

The main question I was responding to was, why doesn't my forge get hotter than orange. If you don't run all the burners with the big HONKIN door closed it will NOT get past orange.

A pic of the WHOLE forge includes the burner including the gas supply circuit, not cropped just above the top of the forge. If it were a new Majestic I wouldn't ask I know what they've been putting on forges in the past years. You say it's older than dirt so it MIGHT have the old more effective burners but you don't know and I can't tell. Make sense?

If you wish to run one or two burners you need to block off the rest of the forge chamber or the heat from the burner WILL disperse to the whole forge.

Also, that old as dirt liner needs to go or you're wasting money. Heating THAT to yellow will break it down to even more useless junk. (HWI) Harbison Walker International, Refractories (Texas outlet address below) makes and sells the K-26 insulating firebrick in various sizes. They also sell high end, refractory blanket and more. You'll probably have to contact a ceramics KILN supply for zirconia, high alumina kiln wash. It's a final layer of protection to prevent welding fluxes from dissolving the refractory and resist mechanical abrasion.

Before driving over give them a call, the above address may be a distribution center and not sell retail but they'll be happy to tell you who does sell to the public in your area. Yes?

I know this doesn't answer all your questions, we'll take care of things one at a time or it's just confusing.

Same Psi i should have understood, i dunno how i dropped the ball on that one - my bad,  how do i block off the rest of the forge when just using the two burners though? (((And i dont usually have that big door open just did for the photo))

Also please keep in mind this is all a school thing so im trying to get the answers to the questions as i can it might be another week or two though...
Thanks for the advice on the lining,

Take your time, there's no rush I check in almost daily.

High temp firebrick cut to fit makes suitable partitions in a box forge and you don't have to modify the forge.

You might be able to get the school to spring for K26 firebrick and a new liner. Making one from good materials is far better than spending silly $ for the low grade Diamond sells these days. Everybody who uses it will be grateful.

If the school won't pay, maybe you can take up a collection from other students. Hmmm?

There are lots of us on Iforge that will be more than happy to help relining it.
