I Forge Iron

File steel.

Recommended Posts

I have an old file that I would like to identify.  The only mark on it is a 5 point star with the letters SF over CO inside the star.  Anybody know which file maker used this logo?   I have forged it into a knife and ready for heat treatment.  Trying to determine what steel it is

I can't help you on the history, but Heres my thoughts on heat treating an unknown piece of steel,,, if you dont want to test a piece or spark test it. I usually assume old files and even new ones are a high carbon steel. If I'm feeling bold and brave I treat it like a W-1/1095 tool steel and water quench. Safest is assume its an O-1 and oil quench.

Lol, no matter what happens, its "jest an ole piece of Iron,,,,"  ;)
