Don1020
Anvil pictures So i have a wilkinson anvil and would like to hear some people's expertise on this anvil. I've been told that its 153lbs and maybe manufactured between 1830 - 1890. Thanks in advance
ThomasPowers
Richard Postman probably has the most expertise on Wilkinson anvils here in the USA. Now if you want to know about the anvil and not about people expertise; I'm sure you can ask specific questions. Note: the edge damage is typical for anvils that have seen a lot of use. The cutting plate looks like it's been reworked to me; can you tell? It looks to be in using shape. Wouldn't make a bad starter anvil for a new smith. The Ring test will indicate if there are any hidden cracks and the Ball bearing test will indicate if it has lost it's temper in a structure fire. Frazer
The 153 pounds comes from the hundred weight system where the 1+1+13 weighs 112+28+13=153 pounds. It probably weighs slightly less now, but it's close enough. As far as any further information I don't have much else to offer. Regardless, looks like she's seen some heavy use over time, but she'll probably still outlive me.
