Using automotive hydraulic pump AC/DC question

Featured Replies

Forgive if this has been asked already, I tried searching but struck out.

There is a reasonable complete 12 ton hydraulic set up for sale I am interested in.  (Motor, ram, pump).  I am thinking it would be a good start on a forge press, but I dont know enough about converting ac to dc.  Would this be as simple as buying a good transformer?  If so, does anyone have any suggestions?

I’m sure Steve or one of the other electrocutions will chime in, but unless you have a universal motor you will need a bit more than a transformer. A transformer will raise or lower the voltage but will not change alternating current to direct current (12v ac is not 12v dc) that requires a rectifier. So you would need a power supply rated for your amperage and voltage or a battery bank and charger.

Most forging presses use fast high flow pumps and fast rams as well; but I’ll let the guys who know how to build them talk you threw it.

It's not a big deal, I did it for a treadmill motor for my belt grinder only to have the motor die of an internal short after all the work to get it out, mount and wire it. It involves bridge rectifiers and a little wiring. Easy Peasy but I'm not about to go into things the Sparkies are trained to do.

Don't be surprised if they ask you questions to clarify exactly what you're intending. It may not be hard to do but it MUST be done right.

Did you use the search function on the forum? If so it leaves a lot to be desired. I search with google and add iforgeiron.com to the search string. I get much better results that way.
