bluerooster Posted January 3, 2020 Posted January 3, 2020 I see many reference 4140 steel, but have yet to see any mention of the venerable old 4130. Many old axle shafts are made from 4130, as well as many enclosed driveshafts. Along with various other easily obtainable car parts. Just curious as to the preference of 4140 over 4130. I have plenty of 4130 to work with, but I'd have to go out and buy 4140. Quote
BillyBones Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 I would venture to guess price and availability. As manufactures went to the 4140 more was produced so the price came down. My supplier does not even list 4130 in their inventory. Quote
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks Posted January 4, 2020 Posted January 4, 2020 4140 has more Carbon and Manganese than 4130, if I recall it's tougher with more wear resistance. 4130 is still very good for tools and welds easier, I like 4130 and have a bunch of it from sucker rods. Quote
bluerooster Posted January 4, 2020 Author Posted January 4, 2020 Old sucker rods, where I come from, are all in use for fencing. The ones not being used for fencing, are still being used in the well. Lots of polish rod, being used for headache racks on pickups. Quote
