Skunk Piper
I just picked this forge up for twenty dollars. The firepot and tuyere are in great shape minus getting the rust loosened up enough to take them apart for a good cleaning. The table, hearth, whatever you wanna call it needs all the sheet metal replaced and repairs to some of the brackets. All in all it's one of the coolest Christmas presents my wife has ever gotten me! Now, can anyone help me figure out who made it? The pot/tuyere/clinker breaker look like some Champions I've seen, but I'm fairly uneducated in this area so I could be(probably am) wrong. Big thing is the table...cant find one like it in any old catalogs, books, or online. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Jake S. BIGGUNDOCTOR
I don't see a real need to replace the sheet metal, as the rot is minor on the edges. The fire will be in the middle, not all the way out to the sides. I have a Buffalo that has a sheet metal pan, quite a bit different in shape though. Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Looks like you got a good deal. I'm with BIGGUNDOCTOR I would not take the firepot out but use some penetrating oil like Kroil or a 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic trans fluid to loosen it all up. Then reinforce the edges with angle iron. It sort of looks like a Canedy-Otto forge I've seen, but that was a lot of years ago so my memory may be wrong. Just found their catalog and yep that's what it is a Royal (Steel) Forge. http://www.bamsite.org/books/canedy.pdf
pnut
I'm not sure of the maker, but it looks like it's in usable condition as is unless the ash dump and clinker breaker are seized. Do you plan on lining it? I can't tell how deep the firepot is but you could line the hearth with bricks except for the firepot to deepen it if needed and still have a flat hearth around it. It looks good on my phone but I'll take your word for it that the sheet metal needs replaced. Definitely make your wife something nice as a thank you gift. You're right it is a very cool gift, until you get a fire in it. Pnut Edited December 24, 2019 by pnut
