671jungle
Anyone have favorite dimensions to start their hammers? I have a steady supply of forklift tines that I may cut into blanks and sell off to fund my smithing. 2"x2"x3.5" yields about 4lb. Considering scale loss and hole punch, would this be a good size to cut them up into? I know not all forks have the same thickness, which would change the weight. So I'm more concerned with the length of the blank.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
A decent small hammer can be made from those dimensions, might go 4" on the length though to allow upsetting the ends.
Conrad.blacksmithing
I normally use 2" round by 4.25" for a 3 pounder. If you are slow like me you can count on losing about 8-12 oz. total after forging and grinding. Square stock will be heavier so you could use 4" like Irondragon said.
