BulletProof
I found a small anvil (20lb) but can't seem to find any details about it. It is stamped "OR". Photo attached. Maker? Year? Any ideas? Thank you!
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome aboard... I would say the OR is a prior owners initials. It looks like one of the Russian ASO anvils that Harbor Freight was importing back in the day. It would help to know your location, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it. This thread would help you with getting the best out of IFI.. READ THIS FIRST
ThomasPowers
Spark test the bottom, I'd bet it was cast iron. I think those markings are original as I think that's the original paint job on it. Anyway; probably an ASO and one too small for much smithing work to boot.
BulletProof
From Canada. No Harbor Freight up here! Just wanted a small anvil for small projects. I have a 126 pound Hay-Budden for bigger stuff. Russian?
ThomasPowers
so you need one like this?
BulletProof
LOL. Except the small projects I do are not necessarily in my shop, and don't always involve a forge! And lugging around the HB would be problematic!
pnut
I've had my eye out for a piece of steel to make a stump anvil from for about the last year. This is the only thing I've found. It works ok for punching and cutting that I don't want to do on my rail anvil Pnut
ThomasPowers
I have a stack of steel chunks suitable for improvised anvils, the local scrapyard had 80# chunks of 4" thick stuff for a while---I tried to pick up the ones with 3" holes drilled in them to lighten them up a bit. Offline till Monday and a small hammering at my shot tomorrow!
