oldgoaly Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 Overall length is 16 to 17 inches, handles are tree wood (have a odd feel like a limb) not turned on a lathe or a dowel rod. Heads are brazed on. also thy seem hard (haven't run a file over them too rusty) The wedge head is sharp (but not too sharp) Quote
Frosty Posted June 7, 2019 Posted June 7, 2019 Look like closed dies to me. Probably best used by strikers or treadle hammer rather than a power hammer. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
oldgoaly Posted June 12, 2019 Author Posted June 12, 2019 Thanks for the reply Frosty, I have them soaking in molasses now to remove the rust. Got to google the term closed dies, I haven't heard other than press dies in the down position. When you stop learning they bee giving you the dirt nap! Quote
Judson Yaggy Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 If they are power hammer tools I'd call them set tools for use on open dies. Closed dies are a completely different animal. Quote
Frosty Posted June 12, 2019 Posted June 12, 2019 Uh. . . Er. . . I THOUGHT there was a pic of a matching swage block but don't see it now. Might not have then. A matching bottom tool or swage would've made them closed dies but without they certainly are NOT. My bad. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
oldgoaly Posted June 26, 2019 Author Posted June 26, 2019 Soaked them in molasses for a good week or so. then just lightly ran them on the expander wheel using 120 grit paper. Some minor pitting. They are fairly hard, would not want them too hard anyway if you hit them. Just in case you are wondering what they are sitting on, my small shot bag on pc of church pew on a stand. Quote
Frosty Posted June 30, 2019 Posted June 30, 2019 Yeah, those should come in handy even if you have to round up a striker. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
