Then it becomes whether or not the area to length vs temperature comes in.. The industrial smith I know uses a 14X14"X 12'size.. I use a 12X12X15'.. If you use coke you can get away with a smaller size or height as the heat stays on for longer time.. I use a hand blower with soft coal so the on off on cycles can reek havoc if not designed properly.. There is no smoke shelf in my hood/stack design.. Here is a link to my design in action.. https://youtu.be/780yI_RMNRE

April 22, 20179 yr Lester Beckman designed the original super sucker side draft unit. Super Sucker - click here Super sucker is just a box with the chimney opening on the top, and the fire opening on one side. The fire opening is cut at an angle to act as both a roof and to get it closer to the fire. Bottom is 12-1/2 x 10 inches Back is 12-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches Top is 12-1/2 x 15 inches Legs are 3/16 x 1 inch Front is constructed from 3/16 x 3 flat bar with a 10x10 opening Chimney opening (12 inch diameter) is larger than the fire opening (10 x 10 inches) in area.
