Which type is better, coil spring or leaf spring hammer?

Recommended Posts

Now when you say coil spring vs leaf spring do you mean like a Little Giant type hammer vs a Champion type hammer or do you mean a tire hammer type hammer vs an appalachian/rusty type hammer?

Also "better" requires more details.  Easier to build? Easier to maintain? Easier to tool? Easier to buy used? Takes up less space?  It's sort of like asking which is a better vehicle a 15 person van or a full sized pickup truck---you have to know the details to say which is better for what.

Welcome aboard, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the Iforge gang live within visiting distance.

Both types of spring have a pretty rudimentary if necessary job in a mechanical power hammer some advantages or disadvantages per type like everything else.

What are your expectations of the spring or more importantly the hammer? Are you buying or building?

What do YOU think the difference is?

We need more information to provide a meaningful answer.

Dear Thomas and Frosty,

I mean by the coil spring hammer, the one in these links

And I mean by the leaf spring hammer, the one in these links

I mean by "better", I need to compare them in according to cost and easiness to manufacture and build

If you are just building one for personal use then I suggest you look into building a tire hammer.

If you plan to manufacture a large number of them then you need to evaluate the designs against your manufacturing capabilities.

The reason that the Little Giant is so very popular here in the USA is that the manufacturer sold them on time payments and so nowadays there is a large base of them around and it is even possible to buy parts for them.  Other designs were perhaps better but now are "orphan" machines and all parts have to be custom made.

The tire in a "tire hammer" is typically an easy and reliable clutch mechanism unlike a Little Giant's conical clutch and wooden clutch shoe design.

All the spring designs have their advantages and disadvantages both to use and to manufacture. I believe the main concern is your intent. Are you planning on building power hammers for sale? Or are you planning on building one or a few to use?

If you're thinking of manufacturing power hammers you have a lot more to think about than the ram linkage spring.

I don't know about what you need to have a meaningful opinion.
