September 27, 2025Sep 27 I use a guillotine with 3/8" fullers. The trick is to keep it turning so it does not bulge to the side. Keeping it on the cooler side of forging temp also helps to keep it from deforming as much. Also make sure that you aim the pipe away from you when quenching. The steam will come out sometimes violently and you do not want a face full of that. In a couple months i will use that same pipe and taper down cones. Cut those off and paint them like Santas and elves. Back when i first got really into smithing my set up was outside next to the garden. I was away from my anvil for a couple weeks and when i got back out the pumpkins had grown up and all over my forge and anvil. As kind of a joke i called my forge "The Punkin' Patch Forge". The name stuck and now many years later my shop is called "Punkin' Patch Forge and Ironworks". Punkin is also nod to my youngest daughter, i have called her that for 30 years now.
