brian
Know this is a difficult one to answer. What size flypress would suit me for general smithing? Mainly work hot mild steel up to 30 mm maximum . I am thinking 5 to 8 ton would suit but need all the advice I can get as I will have to get it shipped over and want to get it right first time. imagedude
I'd suggest that you get a size 6 or larger.
Dave Hammer
On the forums I read, most smiths that have answered this type of question recommend a number 5 fly press. Larger flypresses require significantly more effort and the number 5 flypresses do the job for them.
gerald
I have heard users say that swinging the 100 lb wheel of the P6 and larger presses gets old pretty quick.
imagedude
Presses larger than size 6 are best used with 2 man operation but remember they you can work small stock with a large press but working large stock with a small press is a pain in the rear. Here's my size 4/5 press working 45mm stock.
stretch
I have a 10 ton and love it. The only thing I wish I had thought of was a c frame press instead of the h frame I have. . Can be a lot more versatile. I have learned to use the h frame I have with great results. I agree, it is a lot easier to have one to big than to small. I find when you get a tool you start with small stuff and it gets more and more facinating (spelling) to forge larger and larger pieces. I think my flywheel is 234 lbs. LOVE IT
stretch
These are a 3/4" shaft with about a 1 3/4" head done in one heat. I have tried to do with two people and almost killed him. To used to working alone.
