Charles R. Stevens
Pre revolution the English crown protected the monopoly on hemp rope by forbidding its growth in the Americas. Between the monopoly and terrifs it was expensive to import. But dogbane grows wild here and was known as "Indian hemp". Post revolution it wast an issue
Frosty
About George Washington and hemp. When I was in high school and the '60s were getting into full swing checking out a copy of George Washington's journal from the library became really popular. There were a few entries where he voiced concern he hadn't weeded out the male plants soon enough and the females had been pollinated. Pollinating the female plants has a positive affect for hemp production as the plants become much taller and stalky. Separating them before they pollinate is pretty much a THC enhancing technique. In later entries he said "separate" in the green house. Definitely growing some to smoke, not rig ships. Well okay making tinctures was popular and doing an alcohol extraction is a good way to separate the oil from the veg. Frosty The Lucky.
